Powered by a 3.0 litre TD6 turbo diesel engine with an 8-speed gearbox, it does 0-60 in 7.7seconds, but feels quicker than that, it’s very responsive. It’s lighter, lower and some say less imposing than its predecessor, but everyone agrees it still feels like the most commanding and capable SUV on the road. It turns heads and driving through Richmond Park it achieved more admiring glances than the sports car ahead of us. It’s most welcome in the urban environment and at home on the terrain. Chatting with my passengers, two out of four of us preferred it to the Range Rover Sport – could that be a potential issue that this vehicle creates within its family? It feels like you’re driving something important…sorry make that very important.


It’s the technology that sets this SUV apart from others, with tech-inspired solutions for everything. I personally loved the fact that the second and third row seats (which are very spacious by the way, true adult seats) are not only heated, but can be folded and unfolded with the touch of a button from the infotainment system – or your app! Standard on HSE Luxury cars and optional on the HSEs, it’s not a gimmick, it’s downright useful when you’re loading people and also increases that comfort factor not always present in seven seaters! This is just one of the many reasons why this vehicle is a true family SUV, whilst the wifi and charging points for passengers reinforce it!


After a long day and night in London I was tired, but the Discovery makes you feel ultra-confident and calm whilst


driving, it’s precise in its handling and its torque, but the laidback power delivery combines for a very relaxing driving experience. I loved the heads-up driver display which helped not just with speed, but also navigation, making easy of London’s streets and the Driver Condition Monitor is a good idea for those that put in the miles!


Air suspension raises the ride height, which I lowered to allow my mum, with short legs, to get out – stop laughing! The steering is accurate, you feel stable on bends at speeds, the traction control is evident and you always feel like there’s something in reserve should you ever need it. The suspension soothes away bumps in roads both large and small and off-road it does exactly the thing that you buy it for thanks to the car’s Terrain Response 2 that evens everything out– that’s when the Land Rover badge really excels! It can also wade through 900mm of water; a client of mine would have liked that as she wrote off her Bentley in a flood.


The new Discovery is distinctive, just like its ancestors, and iconic, yes, this vehicle is an icon in the making. It’s big enough to matter on the road to keep you safe, do all you need it to do and is intelligent enough, sophisticated enough and stylish enough to be the perfect family vehicle.
