LIVE24SEVEN // Motoring, Sport & Entertainment LAND ROV E R DI S COV E R Y - MOTOR ING R E V I EW Discovery TD6 HSE

Off-road Capability / On-board Luxury… Test driving this car for a week was both an absolute pleasure and a tease… who wants to hand back the keys when an SUV drives like a dream, looks superb and houses a fridge for your cold drinks?

I was lucky enough to be invited to the world premiere of the new Discovery some months ago; it was a night befitting this world class vehicle, so I couldn’t wait to put it through its paces as Bear Grylls did that night – minus the ascension from helicopter! Let’s face it, it has big shoes to fill, so the pressure on the shoulders of this vehicle was palpable; its predecessor is now an icon, but this vehicle delivers a real ‘changing of the guard’, so to speak, a departure from what used to be, to what everyone is aspiring to deliver – only LR have!

Gone are the boxy lines and straight edges, this beauty is curvaceous; it takes on a more fashionable style, but there’s still a nod to the history here and there – the DNA is not overlooked. It’s practical, versatile and superbly comfortable and the many touches of luxury and class make this, in my eyes, the leading large SUV.

Luxury

Yes, it looks superior and different to its predecessor, but it is inside where the revolution really takes place. The refinement is breath taking. Wood trim, the finest leather and luxurious touches swathe the interior whilst the infotainment system delivers all the technology you could need and more besides – I’ll touch on that later. From TV to heated massage seats, you control every aspect of this vehicle to include, on my test vehicle, ‘4 Zone Climate Control’ making it a bespoke drive and environment for you and your passengers. Amongst many great options my test vehicle also included a fridge (Front Centre Console Cooler £235) positioned discreetly between the two front seats. Some might think this is a luxury you can live without, but think about what this vehicle is intended to do, plus having a fridge is no bad thing on a journey; it’s an option I’d consider. The electric panoramic roof seemed to increase the size of the sumptuous interior and our passengers loved the views through the park and city from all angles.

Comfy seats with great recline and the elevated driving position make you feel like the commander of a very important ship – or luxury yacht! The host of cameras gives you a level of comfort in any tight spots, but in all honesty this vehicle drives itself.

In Land Rover’s own words, it is the most capable vehicle that they have made to date, which is evident as you drive it and experience the multitude of features and technology that combine to create a car that thinks and acts in your interests. Many features come as standard such as LED headlights, a 14-speaker premium audio system, rear-seat entertainment screens and 21in alloy wheels, but the optional extras aren’t flighty, they all serve a purpose and add to the incredible base vehicle that comes as standard.
