LIVE24SEVEN // Best Of Birmingham THE EDGBAS TON - DIAGEO WOR LD C LAS S GB S EMI - F INAL S World class

Last week saw the Diageo World Class GB Semi- Finals and our boys James Bowker and Thomas Matthews found themselves flying through to the GB finals in June!

World Class is undoubtedly the most prestigious cocktail competition in the world, with over fifty countries represented at the Global Finals, which this year will be held in the city of spice - Mexico City. To secure a spot at this incredible competition you must first win within your country, a fiercely fought battle in itself.

The top 50 bartenders from the whole country gathered to compete in three challenges, each one testing all the skills of a bartender, from identifying six vodkas by taste alone to picking out classic cocktails and the precise products used to make them, through to written exams, creativity challenges and a speed round.

The top 50 were drawn from the best bars in the country and are some of the most talented people out there, so when James and Thomas were announced as finalists it was truly a moment of elation.

Thomas recalls “I was a bag of nerves when I woke up, but I knew we had both put the work and research time in”. The night before James and Thomas had been up until the early hours drinking beautiful whisky and firing off quiz questions at each other. He continues: “It was so great meeting everyone on arrival. 50 of the UK’s best in one room. People I look up to and massively respect. I needed a quick cup of tea to settle my nerves!”.

We are the only bar in the country to have two UK World Class finalists in 2017. What a testament to Birmingham!

'Hello, Gorgeous'

The Edgbaston have been so delighted to create a cocktail for guests attending Funny Girl at The Hippodrome starring Sheridan Smith - called 'Hello Gorgeous'

'Hello, Gorgeous' Laurent Perrier Brut Champagne, Peach Liqueur, English Rose, Neroli Distillate, Edible Perfume

Inspired by a time of simplicity and utter elegance, Fanny Brice's cheeky comedy is laced within this bubbly cocktail.

After her Mothers name we have chosen rose to be the floral foundation of this cocktail, Peach liqueur introduces her soft and gentle nature before adding Neroli, Wowing us with its incredible perfume just like Fanny, when she was chosen to be the glamorous face for "Irresistible" perfume.
