clear of the Premier Division relegation places with a 24-15 win against Penlan E in the Swansea and District Table Tennis League. Carmarthen’s Martyn Fenner
picked up a trio of 3-0 wins with teammate Andrew Joules totalling 8-5 via a 2-3 loss to Bradley Abrahams and wins over Shankly Ismail (3-0) and Peter Andrews (3- 2).
C’s captain, Simon Packer,
scored 5-7 from a 0-3 defeat by Abrahams, a 3-1 win over Ismail and a 2-3 loss to Andrews. Packer and Fenner lost the opening doubles set 2-3 to Ismail and Abrahams. Carmarthen C then drew 20-20
with Penlan D in their next outing, with Fenner scoring 8-4 from wins over Lydia John (3-1) and Peter Langley (3-0) against a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Ben Mora.
Joules lost 1-3 in each of his

Athletics calendar continues
THE INDOOR SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS calendar
in
Carmarthenshire continues on Thursday (Jan 19), following on from over 500 runners taking part in the Primary and Years Seven and Eight competitions in the latter stages of last year. Now it’s the turn of Years Nine and
10, who will be selected by schools to compete in the Carmarthenshire Secondary Schools Indoor Sportshall Athletics Championships, which will be held at Carmarthen Leisure Centre on Thursday. The first event starts at 10am and
the busy programme will conclude at around 12.15pm. This competition is multi-event and competitors must compete in three events, which includes the two lap, four lap, standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump, shot and speed bounce. After these championships,
athletes will be considered for selection for the Dyfed team to compete in the Welsh Inter District Sportshall Athletics Championships at Cwmbran at the beginning of March.
Edwards comes out on top IT WAS A BUSY time in the
lead up to Christmas for the Seniors at Carmarthen Golf Club. The competition on the morning
of their Christmas dinner is always eagerly awaited, and with a full field, albeit on a slightly shortened course, it was Alan Edwards who came out on top with 47 points, followed by Rob Lincoln with 45 points, with Stuart Barclay taking third from Dai Elias with a better back nine with both on 43 points. The competition saw a
remarkable two holes from Rodri Davies; an eagle two on the 12th was followed by a hole in one on the 13th. 10 stableford points in two holes is quite an achievement; sadly, the rest of his round did not meet this high standard. The dinner sees new Seniors
captain Ryan Bowen take over the reins for the forthcoming season. All members wished him the best. It also sees the awarding of the prestigious ‘Bandit of the Year award, which goes to the senior who picks up the most prize money from senior competitions over the year. The winner was Chris Smith but, for
tax reasons, the amount cannot be disclosed. Peter Jones was runner- up.
Other competitions over the
past month have seen wins for Alan Edwards, Dai Elias and Graham Williams in the High/Low Competition with 81 points from Meirion Griffiths, Stuart Barclay and Chris Smith second with 78 points and Alan Williams, Tony Fairlamb and Len Davies in third with 77 points. In the last stableford competition
before Christmas, it was Gary Turner who took first place with 43 points, Graham Williams in second with 41 points and Alun Davies in third with 40 points. The New Year got off to a
cracking start with a very competitive Accumulator competition (one score to count on first six holes, two on the next six and all three on the last six holes). The winners with were Ray Sinden, Ken Gealy and Tony Jones with 86 points, Ryan Bowen, Gary Thomas and Rob Lincoln were second with 83 points, and in third came Dave Goodman, Mervyn Lewis and Tony Fairlamb with 81 points.
TWO students currently
studying with the UWTSD group recently competed in the World Sea Rowing Championships in Monte Carlo.
Over 750 competitors from 31
countries took part in three days of competition that were held in the presence of Prince Albert of Monaco in October. The Great Britain team fielded a
30-strong squad, which included five Welsh representatives who all received their training at the Wales Sea Yoles Training headquarters at the Towy Boat Club in Llansteffan. Two of the five Welsh representatives are studying with the UWTSD Group - Swyn Williams is a BA Physical Education student with the School of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education at UWTSD in Carmarthen and Charlotte Heath is a student at Coleg Sir Gar. Both competed in the ladies double event and succeeded in
reaching the Group A final. Swyn and Charlotte were racing
against teams who had competed in this year’s Rio Olympics and and others with many years of experience at international level. With both being just 18 years old,
UWTSD is incredibly proud of their achievement. “The School of Sport, Health and
Outdoor Education is delighted with Swyn and Charlotte’s achievements, and in particular their representation as female role models in non-traditional sporting activities. Their success reinforces west Wales as a great venue for a diverse range of health promoting outdoor activities,” said Ceredig Emanuel, Head of the School of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education at UWTSD. “Over the last six months, Swyn
and Charlotte received intensive training and guidance from Dr Alun Stedman at Towy Boat Club, which
enabled them to achieve national and international standard in a short period of time – a true testament to their dedication and ambition. Their success also strengthens the ties between the university and Towy Boat club,” he added. “We were in complete shock when
we found out that we had been chosen to represent both Wales and Great Britain in the World Championships, especially since we had only been training together for four months,” says Swyn. “It was an incredible experience
which we never dreamed of happening to us, and we hope to take our success and hard work into next year's World Championships in Geneva.” Swyn and Charlotte have shown
significant dedication and achieved success early on in their rowing careers. They are both now training to compete on Lake Geneva next year.
