Max/Min (Day) MARK JAMES CBE, who

has made his fair share of the headlines over the last couple of years, has finally received some national recognition for his efforts. Whether the award from Private

Eye magazine is quite the sort of reward for his efforts that the council’s most senior employee expected or would appreciate is quite another matter. In its most recent edition, the

satirical magazine has handed out one of its not-so coveted awards to Mr James for his selfless pursuit of blogger Jacqui Thompson for libel damages in order to protect the dignity of his office and the reputation of the local authority he serves with such distinction.

THE MAYOR of Llanelli's

fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis was held this week in 'Boleyn's', situated in Llanelli Town Centre. You got it, named after Anne Boleyn: that unfortunate lady from Norfolk and Marquis of Pembroke who ended up like one of Bernard Matthews' turkeys - truly stuffed and sans head

- when Henry Vlll got fed up with her.

Around 40 or so from Llanelli

society attended the event, including the Mayor of Kidwelly, Stephen John, the Chairman of Llanelli Rural Council, Steven Donoghue, Reverend Eldon Phillips and George Parker, amongst others. Debbie, the proprietress, told

us that the place has only been open for a year and already has a big following. This is not surprising, given that they served some of the best tasting food around. The evening panned out with

wine tasting followed by antipasti and tapas. People gave generously and The Herald is not sure if that was the result of the wine tasting or just the sheer pleasure of sitting in such pretty surroundings. This new-ish business resembled the cafe of the Knights of the Round Table after they had watched Grand Designs and decided to give it a makeover, complete with hundreds of fairy lights and a host of interesting objet d'art covering every surface and spilling out onto the patio. Guests were asked to dig deep

for the raffle in order to hear (or not to hear) the mayor of Llanelli sing. Fortunately - perhaps unfortunately for some - enough cash was thrown into the pot for him to give a rendition of the Ray Charles classic 'That Lucky Old Sun'. Cllr Thomas thanked everyone

for attending the event, which he said had raised a substantial amount for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Car in hedge following B4309 accident A CAR left the road on the

B4309 between Llanelli and Penyfai Lane last weekend (Jan 7-8). The silver Ford had gone through

a hedge just after the bend at Penyfai Lane and was cordoned off with police tape.

The Herald can confirm that no one was hurt in the accident. A Dyfed-Powys

Police

spokesperson said: “Police were advised, just after 2.30am on Sunday (Jan 8) of a single vehicle road traffic collision which occurred on the B4309 Furnace to Five Roads road. “A silver ford fiesta left the road. No injuries reported.”
