safer. “Now I can tell you I am continuing to purchase our buses with them installed,” she said. “Te improvement we’ve seen in behavior just solidified the fact that we made the right decision. Better behaved kids equals a safer bus.” Conversely, with Pieper, the jury is still out on cameras. “I don’t think cameras are a deterrent at
all,” she said. “I’ve seen kids do stuff and look at the camera and smile. Cameras are a way to identify and appropriately consequence.” Keith Chrans, transportation director of the Campbell County School District in Gillette, Wyo-
ming, reported a 70 percent drop in discipline problems on his buses with the lap-shoulder belts. “We know this from our disciplinary forms,” Chrans said. “We have 70 percent less disciplinary reports being filled out.”
Chrans said cameras have also contributed to the reduction in disciplinary problems, adding his staff have not seen a reduction in problems on buses without the belts. “Our drivers who have the belts are glad to have them,” he said. “Tey are strong advocates to remain with seat belts.”
