In this heartwarming message, autism specialist Patrick Mu- lick will share how student-centered thinking can impact actions, decisions, and outcomes. Julie Weatherly, Esq. Navigating Legal Mine Fields in Special Needs Transportation Monday, March 12 Back by popular demand, Weatherly off ers over 30 years of expertise in legal and consultation services to school districts and other agencies on educating students with disabilities. She has been a member of the faculty for many national and state legal institutes and is a frequent speaker at special education law conferences. In June of 1996, Julie appeared on “60 Minutes” to discuss the cost of meeting the legal requirements of the IDEA. In 1998, she was honored by Georgia’s Council for Exceptional Children as the individual who had contributed most to students with disabilities. In April 2012, Julie received the National CASE Award for outstanding service.
Lori Desautels, Ph.D. Improving Social & Emotional Student Health on the School Bus Tuesday, March 13 Applied educational neuroscience is a framework and discipline that addresses the neurobiology of stress, regulation, engagement and connection. It uses applied educational neuroscience research and strategies to ensure educators are “sitting beside their students in relationship, behaviors, and academics.” School bus drivers are the fi rst and last responders for students each day. Our drivers have the ability to powerfully impact student brain state and behavior before they enter schools each day! Learn the brain aligned strategies, stress response, and brain development bus drivers need to understand so relationship and regulation with the neuro-diverse brains of our children are present and active. All children and adolescents challenged with emotional, cognitive, and social needs will begin to understand that their genius brains are wired for resiliency and change.
