Abu Dhabi: Capital Ci

Abta’s Travel Conventions offer a fantastic opportunity to experience some of the world’s We asked Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority to outline the must-sees of this diverse

History & Culture Abu Dhabi has a rich cultural heritage that both celebrates the past and strides towards the future. Traditional dhow cruises through the city’s natural mangroves teach visitors about the emirate’s pearl-diving history, and offer guests the chance to shuck their oysters and leave with their own pearl. The ‘Oasis City’ of Al Ain, just 90 minutes from the capital, is a heritage heartland brimming with forts (pictured), museums and Unesco World Heritage Sites. The modern Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular religious buildings in the world, capable of holding more than 40,000 worshippers. As to the future, the hotly anticipated Louvre Abu Dhabi will open next year on Saadiyat Island, showcasing works from the likes of Da Vinci, Monet, Van Gogh and Matisse.

Family Fun There’s fun for all ages on Yas Island. Not content with having the fastest rollercoaster in the world (Formula Rossa), Ferrari World Abu Dhabi’s latest ride, Flying Aces, boasts the tallest loop in the world – a stomach- churning 52m. It’s a short hop from here to Yas Waterworld, a futuristic water park with 45 rides, slides and attractions. Parents can relax while younger kids enjoy the biggest children’s play area in Arabia. Teens and the young at heart can surf the world’s largest sheet wave, Bubble’s Barrel, or ride the region’s longest suspended rollercoaster, the Bandit Bomber.

Beach Bliss With more than 400 kilometres of coastline, Abu Dhabi has no shortage of breathtaking beaches. Right on the city’s doorstep is Saadiyat Beach, a nine-kilometre ribbon of protected white sand where hawksbill turtles come to nest each spring. Many more beaches, including those on Yas Island and along the Corniche, are within easy reach of the airport and an ever-growing number of world-class hotels. Others are on Maldives-esque islands like Zaya Nurai, just a 12-minute boat ride from Saadiyat Island, or adorning the coast of remote Sir Bani Yas.
