ast year on Easter morning it was cloudy and still dark when worshipers of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, Murrells Inlet, S.C., gathered ... where else?
The beach, of course. Some 700 of them. That’s what they do every year. And then worshipers are
invited to drive several miles to the church for pancakes served by Lutheran Men in Mission. Lloyd Mackall said the engine of Lutheran men at Shep-
herd of the Sea “seems to run on pancakes.” They had plenty of pancake batter Easter Sunday, but probably not enough for 700, he said. But more than 100 made the pilgrimage to church for 7 a.m. breakfast. Member Bill Storm arrived early to examine the stain-
less steel commercial kitchen hood and ended up giving it a thorough cleaning well before members and guests came through the doors. Once the men got cooking, worshipers were offered plain or blueberry pancakes and sausages. It’s not the only time of year the Shepherd of the Sea
also serve them on Shrove (Fat) Tuesday when historically perishable ingredients had to be used up before the fasting period of Lent, said Mackall, who has done considerable pancake research. When the Lutheran men’s group meets the fourth Mon-
day of every month, a frequent menu choice (other than hot dogs) is pancakes, especially when there is leftover batter to use, he said.
