Cirencester Scene Magazine - Establishing Local Connections

ABBEY 900

The plans for Abbey 900 continue to take shape with continuing support from all sectors of the town. Twomajor partners have recently signed up to help ensure that the Festival takes place. Sewell, Mullings and Logie have agreed to be a major sponsor of the LEGO brick model of the Abbey and theWinstone Trust has also become a prime sponsor of the Festival. Corinne Lamus, chair of the Abbey 900 steering group said, “It is fantastic. Since the launch in September we are having more and more groups express their commitment to this project. We are well on our way to make this a fantastic year for the people of Cirencester”. Other activities are still being added to the programme. Cirencester College are helping to find volunteers to support the Festival, such as developing a web page, butwill also build in links with their Festival of Learning in July 2017.

The next major event on the calendar is an evening to recruit volunteers to join in. The op- portunities range frombeing part of the team of people who will become “builders” of the LEGO Abbey, to helping with the Plantagenet re-en- actment due to take place in Abbey Grounds in May 2017. There is also a need for people to help prior to the start of the Festival by contrib- uting skills such as help with administration or some of the planning of the various activities. Meg Blumsom, Secretary to Abbey 900 said “There is a lot of interest in something which is exciting as this, and we welcome anyone, what- ever their skills, abilities or interests. After all this project is about building something to en- gage the whole community. We really value what people’s energy and ideas can bring to this town, and we are hoping to create a whole team of enthusiastic Festival Ambassadors”.

The volunteer event will be held in the Bingham Gallery on Wednesday 9th November, between 3.00 and 7.30 pm. Anyone who is interested is 18

invited to turn up and find out more about the whole programme or sign up to be a Festival Ambassador.

(see previous article). Corinne was colour co-ordinated with lilac andmauve scarves in the coporate colours, which raised a smile. There has been a good response to the pleas for financial support and a large amount has already been put forward. Hopefully yet more local businesses will support this worthwhile project.
