GRANT ULLYOT Cranberries are pumped to a tanker truck for shipment to Ocean Spray. Gulikers expecting a big harvest this year

TRI Cranberries in Chilliwack, owned by the Guliker farm, is now in its sixth year of operation and will produce an estimated 550,000 pounds of berries this year, all of which are trucked to Ocean Spray’s Langley plant. From there the berries are shipped for processing to plants in the U.S. Two of the three bogs were planted with the Steven variety, the industry standard. Other bogs were planted with Haines and a new variety called Grygleski. Case Guliker, his dad Harry and his brother John own and operate the farm. Case says the family harvest is supported by a small group of contracted workers.

Keefer, whose cranberry farm is located in the Ladysmith area on Vancouver Island, says the weather last year at pollination time was wonderful. “There were lots of bees around and pollination was excellent. The weather throughout the summer was warm, at times hot, but our crops need sun. We’re looking forward to another good harvest.” While it is still too early to estimate the size of this year’s crop, Cranberry Commission chair Jack Brown says last year’s yield was 900,000 barrels. Ninety-eight per cent of the cranberries produced in B.C. are shipped to and processed by Ocean Spray Inc., with plants in Langley and Richmond. From there they are shipped to plants in the U.S. for further processing into packaged whole berries and canned berries, Craisins, and a variety of juice combinations.
