In January the Nebraska Trucking Association held its first Annual Safety and Technology Summit in Omaha. Tis summit was timed perfectly to address the ELD mandate as well as other new and enhanced safety technology. With over 15 technology vendors presenting, the 120 attendees were provided a wealth of knowledge in a little more than one day.


Many carriers have used telematics for years, starting with mobile communications, global positioning, and tracking. Many of those systems also now provide engine performance and monitoring, along with critical events data to help analyze driver behavior. Recently enhancements have been made to include instantaneous engine fault code reporting including complete historical data for that engine and group of engines with severity prioritization and suggested actions. Tis data can allow for critical decisions to be made which could help to prevent an on road breakdown.

Nebraska Trucking Association is a statewide trade association for commercial truck and bus operators and affiliated businesses. It is a not-for- profit association governed by a board of directors elected annually. Nebraska Trucking is an affiliate of the American


control, over speed alerts (based on camera recognizing roadside speed signs and alerting the driver). Our January Safety and Technology Summit highlighted these and many of the other new safety technologies on the market. A good number of carriers are currently using electronic devices and mobile communications with tracking. Many of those carriers are implementing the other technology mentioned here. Te end result is keeping our drivers and our highways more safe than ever.

Another area of technological advance is the video event recording device. When triggered by an unusual or critical event, a device can capture video outside the truck as well as inside the truck prior to, during, and after the event. Engine speed and braking can also be captured at the time of the event. Carriers are using these devices to get a clear understanding of various incidents and are able to use the information to get a clear understanding of the event as well as coach drivers to improve performance.

Tere isn’t a day that goes by without news of a new or enhanced technological offering for the trucking industry. Te recent FMCSA ruling, mandating ELD (electronic logging device) as of December 2017 for all 2000 and newer class 8 trucks, has created a need for companies not using Electronic Logging Devices to understand and acquire an ELD solution.
