the corrosiveness of salt brine (at 23% sodium chloride solution) as well as blends of salt brine and calcium chloride (typically a 30-32% solution). Headwaters inhibitors were first used

on winter roads in Montana in 2011. Te Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is charged with maintaining over 25,000 lane miles of roadways, many of which require extensive winter upkeep in order to remain passable 365 days a year regardless of weather conditions that can include heavy snowfall and ice buildup. It was under these conditions that

Headwaters inhibitors demonstrated their effectiveness in the first year of application, and MDT has continued to use the product as part of its winter road treatment strategies. During the 2014-2015 winter MDT applied 5.8 million gallons of inhibited salt brine, a volume that has increased steadily for several years. In response to the success of the new

product, Rivertop has increased production and is now making the Headwaters available to winter road crews throughout the country.

SAVINGS ADD UP FOR TRUCKERS, ROAD DEPARTMENTS AND PUBLIC By using liquid brines, agencies in these

states are able to find short-term materials and labor savings, allowing them to invest in corrosion inhibitors and, in turn, realize substantial savings by avoiding the cost of repairing and replacing corroded fleet vehicles, snowfighting equipment and road infrastructure. Rivertop has developed a corrosion

reduction calculator that states and municipalities can use to project the savings that come with adding the company’s inhibitors to their salt brines. While each state has different deicing needs, Rivertop has found that in many cases a department of transportation can experience direct savings that are six to nine times the cost of adding Headwaters inhibitors to brine. If we assume that the Nebraska

Department of Roads (DOR) applies 2,000,000 gallons of brine in a winter, the calculator projects that agency would save a net $10,700,000 in avoided corrosion damage to their fleet, snowfighting equipment and

highway infrastructure. Te calculator projects that the driving public would save $10,200,000 in avoided repair and premature replacement of private and commercial vehicles as well as the vehicles owned by public agencies other than the DOR. Use of corrosion inhibitors also improves the public’s perception of road departments. As more road agencies move to use

highly effective liquid deicing treatments, the costs of corrosion will only increase unless new strategies are developed. Preventing

corrosion won’t be the only qualification for a successful inhibitor, however, and that’s why transportation departments need to keep an eye on costs and environmental factors. Tere are not many cases where

performance, cost and sustainability line up, but thanks to the advances in green chemistry, there is now more hope for fighting salt- induced corrosion and reducing expenditures by road departments, commercial fleets and the public on repair and replacement of vehicles, equipment and infrastructure.
