was indeed privileged to be asked to speak at a tribute event honoring a friend of the arts—VickiMeek. The Friends of the SouthDallasCultural Center (SDCC) paid homage to cultural iconVickiMeek for her many years of service as a com- munity activist and celebrated her upcoming retirement from the position ofManager at the SDCC, a division of theCity of DallasOffice ofCulturalAffairs. Artists, culturalworkers, com- munitymembers, family and friends praisedMeek through stories and live performances.Beckles DancingCompanywas invited to present the first performance of the celebration.VickiMeek has contributed over 30 years of service to field of arts administration andwe gathered to thank her for theworks she has done in cultivating cultural equity in our nation!

Little did I knowthatwhen itwas suggested in 1997 that I call her at SDCC, itwas the beginning of her tenure there.Meek has supported us (BecklesDancingCompany, and somany others) ever since!

VickiMeek, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a nationally rec- ognized artistwho has exhibitedwidely. She received herBachelor of FineArts fromTyler School of FineArts inElkins Park, Pennsylvania and herMaster of FineArts fromtheUniversity ofWisconsin in Madison,Wisconsin. In addition to her training in fine arts,Ms.Meek did post graduatework inArtHistory atQueensCollege inNewYork.


Ms.Meek’swork is included in numerous private collections and is included in the public collections of theMuseumof FineArts,Houston, NorwalkCommunityCollege inNorwalk,Connecticut, and theAfrican AmericanMuseuminDallas.


She is one of tenNasherXChange artists commissioned by TheNasher SculptureCenter to create a site specificwork celebrating its 10th Anniversary. I sawher site-specificwork at PaulQuinnCollege,which includedEleo Pomare andAnnWillams, among others.


Recognized by numerous organizations includingWomen ofVisionary Influence(DallasChapter)Arts&CultureMentor of the Year, St. Phillips School&CommunityCenterDestinyAward, TexasBlack Film FestivalMissionAward andDallasObserverMastermindAward,Vicki Meek served asChair of theNational PerformanceNetwork/Visual ArtistsNetwork from2011- 2015 and is anAdvisoryBoardmember for TeatroDallas,EastDallasCommunity School andARGANOVA DANCE.


LorisAnthonyBeckles is theArtisticDirector ofBecklesDancing Company and ardent admirer ofVickiMeek.
