~ Graceful in her stage pres- ence, Eki Shola captivates the audience with her lush com- positions.

Physically emot-

ing as she plays her keyboard with a gentle swaying of her statuesque physique. Eki, (pro- nounced like Becky without the B) has that certain something, an almost palpable refinement when she enters a room. Cre- ativity and musicality are the giſts of this talented artist. Shola credits her family, spe- cifically her parents and two

siblings, as hav- ing the great- est influence on her musi- cal upbringing. She was born in London to Ja- maican parents and moved to New York City when she was 9 years old. She started play- ing piano as a little girl at 4 years of age and was classically trained with private lessons. Steeped in mu- sic since child- hood, she reads music and stud- ied music the-

ory. Based in Sonoma County for the last 5 years, Shola has put down roots in this musical hub. Exclusively focusing on creating original music, Shola’s niche is comprised of ethereal pieces that take the listener on a journey. EkiShola.com says the artist “mixes ambient piano,

syncopated beats, unexpected effects, and jazz organ riffs, compelling listeners to engage with her music in the here and now.” Look for the release of her debut album this summer entitled, Final Beginning. Shola notes that

mental health resources in this community are scarce and re- marks on the healing aspect of music for body and mind, “I have been able to use music therapeutical- ly in my own life and to connect with others through it.” She shared the experience of losing her mother to cancer several years ago, the inspiration be- hind her song called, Drunken Stars. She looked up one night in the Sonoma County sky and in seeing the multitude of stars,

she was aware of her Mother’s presence. She speaks about the self-healing process, where “out of grief something beautiful can happen.” She hopes her

music. Primarily a solo

artist, who laid down the tracks for all the differ- ent instruments

on her keyboard, Shola says one of her next steps is to play with a local band because she enjoys the connection with other mu- sicians. Words of wisdom from Eki Shola, “as much as our ex- istence is about helping others, and it is! It is also about self- fulfillment of your passions. If you’re not leading a life that’s authentic to you then, what is the point?”
