1840 1d black, plate 6, FK, 4 small to very good margins on 1841 EL (black MC) from Christie & Mansons (forerunner of Christies) to Mr. Baler (?) in Crosby Square giving details of an auction on 5 Dec 1840 in which they offered Mr. Baler among others, a CANALETTY (sic) ‘View of Mestre’ (sold for 5 Guineas) and a VAN DYCK ‘The Crucifixion’ (unsold, bought in) and four other items. Apparently sold in 2011 in the Chartwell collection, auctioned by Spink & Co. An interesting item for the Art Historian. Black wax seal on reverse flap. Research into the original handwriting, the wax seal and the whereabouts of the Duke in October 1840 has established that the Provenance of this cover appears to be correct with similar dated covers and Dover/Walmer transit covers sold by Cavendish.
