Spring and Summer Leucojum Zone: 4-8

Height: Summer snowflakes reach 45-91 cm (1 1/2 -3 ft.). Spring snowflakes reach 30 cm (12 in.) Bloom time: Mid to late spring. Colours: White.

Growing conditions: Easy to please, they will tolerate full sun to dappled shade and are also not fussy about soil condition. Planting: Plant bulbs 10 cm (4 in.) deep and 10 cm (4 in.) apart.

Special Notes: Leucojum aestivum (summer) and Leucojum vernum (spring) are both easy to grow, the only thing they will not tolerate is standing water or soggy soil.

Lillies (Lilium) Zone: 3-8

Height: Most range between 30-120 cm (1-4 ft.), but some species can exceed 2.5 m (8 ft.). Bloom time: Spring, summer and fall. Colours: Red, pink, orange, white and several colour blends. Growing conditions: Prefer loamy soil and full to part sun.

Planting: Plant in a hole two to three times as deep as the bulbs are high.

Special notes: Lillies are one of the oldest cultivated plants and have beautiful, large, fragranced flowers. Nearly all white lilies are scented. Most of the other colored varieties are completely devoid of any perfume or scent except the tiger lily; it has a sweet scent.

Muscari Zone: 2-9 Height: 10-20 cm (4-8 in.). Bloom time: Mid-spring. Colour: Blue and white with green highlights.

Growing conditions: Muscari will tolerate full sun to full shade and normal, sandy or clay soils.

Planting: Bulbs should be planted at least 8 cm (3 in.) deep, in a location where water won’t settle in winter.

Special notes: The most well-known are the Muscari armenia- cum or, as they are more commonly known, grape hyacinths. No garden should be without them, they are a “plant and forget them” flower that require no care and they have a great fragrance.

Daffodil (Narcissus) Zone: 3-9

Height: From 12 cm (5 in.) to 61 cm (24 in.) to every size in between. Bloom time: Late winter to early spring. Colour: Yellow, white and yellow with white or orange.

Growing conditions: Plants tolerate sun or partial shade and prefer well-drained soil.

Planting: Bulbs should be planted from one and a half to five times the bulbs’ height – 8 cm (3 in.) or even deeper in cold climates.

Special notes: Daffodils occur naturally in the wild and are wonderful additions to the garden.
