Kristina Queen, DATIA Programs Director

How long have you been with DATIA and what changes have you seen since you started? I started with DATIA in 2006. It’s unbelievable to think that I have been with DATIA for 9 years! I have seen many changes in the time I have

been here. There have been a lot of technological advances and a burst in DATIA membership and attendance at our Annual Conferences each year. I just remember thinking, “Who knew there was so much business centered around urine?”

What do you love most about DATIA? What I love most about DATIA are the people. I have the privi- lege of working with some of the most successful people in the industry including our instructors and members. We have such a variety of people within our membership; all of whom are just so passionate about their businesses. It’s not just a business to them—it is a cause. DATIA members believe in drug testing as a tool to make our world safer.

What do you find most intriguing about the drug and alcohol testing industry? Te most intriguing thing about the drug & alcohol testing industry to me is the testing process. I am so impressed by all the players in this well orchestrated testing process—from collectors to MROs to DERs and so on. Te best thing about DATIA is the solidarity. DATIA members work together and support one another. Tey share information and opportunities with each other. I have not seen this in any other fields.

Fun Question—What’s something completely unexpected about you that members don’t know? Few people know that I am not only biracial, but bicultural as well. I was born in Denmark, and am half African American and half Danish. I was raised in both Europe and the United States and graduated from college in Europe with a degree in international trade. I have traveled a lot and have circled the globe and eventually landed in Annapolis, MD, where I am happy to be mommy to a litle boy and a puppy, Max and Jax. Also, I am obsessed with crowns since my last name is Queen! I have quite an extensive collection of crowns all over my house, along with a wonderful sign welcoming all visitors to my Queendom.

Emily Gilcher, DATIA Membership Manager

How long have you been with DATIA and what changes have you seen since you started? I have been with DATIA since April of 2007–8 years! I have seen so many changes with DATIA; it’s hard to count! We have improved and expanded

our educational offerings, website, online presence, and benefits in a multitude of ways, and we have matured and grown along with our ever-expanding membership. What is remarkable, also, is the ways we have not changed. Laura Shelton and Kristina Queen and many of our Board Members and instructors have been here working hard to make all of these changes throughout my time here and it is nice to rely on their core strengths that make DATIA what it is. Addi- tionally, Adina Young, our newest team member, is amazing and it feels like she’s been here forever too.

What do you love most about DATIA? I love our members and our team. I enjoy interacting with and supporting our members and I pride myself in being a responsive, reliable resource as I hope DATIA is for many. I also adore my team

members and know I can rely on them in thick and thin to make DATIA and its membership grow and succeed.

What do you find most intriguing about the drug and alcohol testing industry? What I find most intriguing about this industry is how relevant, widespread, and diverse it is. Drug and alcohol addiction touch- es most peoples’ lives pretty closely and there are so many ways in which our work helps to face addiction and addiction issues.

Fun Question—What’s something completely unexpected about you that members don’t know? I am a licensed acupuncturist. In fact, the reason I spent my first several years working part-time at DATIA was that the rest of the time, I was studying to get a Masters in Acupuncture. It took 3 and a half years! I really enjoy supporting people in healing and wellness and think everyone should try acupuncture at least once! I promise it really doesn’t hurt!
