T e hotel, leisure and sport sectors ended 2014 on a positive note aſt er construction contracts reached their highest level in more than two years, says new research. T e value of hotel, leisure and sport con-
struction contracts awarded totalled more than £574m in November, found fi gures published in the Economic and Construction Market Review from construction intelligent service provider Barbour ABI. Buttress wins Blackpool Winter Gardens contract
Manchester-based architecture firm Buttress has seen off stiff competition from Heneghan Peng and Austin-Smith Lord to win the design contract for a £21m museum in Blackpool Winter Gardens. T e Blackpool Museum will document
the town’s rise as the world’s fi rst working class Victorian seaside town and celebrate its contribution to pop culture. T e Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has
granted £13.6m in development funding, while Blackpool council is contributing a further £20m. Details:

£70m Southampton scheme kicks off
Construction work has got underway on the £70m mixed-use WestQuay Watermark devel- opment in Southampton’s city centre. Having won planning permission for
the leisure-led project in June 2014, devel- oper Hammerson has appointed Sir Robert McAlpine as the main contractor, with con- struction work having started on 5 January 2015. ACME is masterplanner and architect for Watermark WestQuay, Grant Associates is the landscape designers and Barton Wilmore provided planning advice on the project. WestQuay Watermark will be developed in
