Mayes, founder of the San Francisco Suicide Prevention Hotline and who also happens to be one of the founders of my favorite radio network, NPR. Also in atten- dance was San Diego’s Tracie Jada O’Brien, a transgender and HIV/AIDS activist, who is directly responsible for this lady being allowed to walk down the main isle of the state assembly in full drag. Just a few years ago, O’Brien fought incredibly hard to eliminate the California laws that made “cross-dressing” illegal. Making new friends at the ceremony with the “Black Diamond King,” fashion and

jewelry designer, Azature, was truly a pleasure, as was hanging with last year’s in- terim mayor, the fabulous man who kept San Diego operating and somehow made road repair sexy, San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria. This was a day and an honor that will not be soon forgotten and a renewed call to create real and positive change in our world.

SPIRIT AWARDS Hold onto your hats ladies and gentlemen, I have just returned from a trip to

CALIFORNIA’S LGBT CAUCUS

Sacramento, California and the politicians I found there were lovely. Yes, dears, you heard me correctly. The LGBT Caucus of the California State House of Representatives and Senate be-

stowed an amazing honor upon Jewels. They selected me as one of 10 phenomenal folks in the state of California to receive the LGBT Spirit Award, given in recognition for leadership, achievements and humanitarian works in our community. I arrived in Sacramento and was greeted by Senator Ricardo Lara, who helped to

introduce me to my fellow honorees. They represented a wide spectrum of talented and passionate LGBT community members, who we would all be wise and blessed to use as inspiration. This diverse group of movers and shakers included actor, author and civil rights activist, George Takei, Kate Kendell, the executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the respected LGBT advocate Bernard

76 RAGE monthly | JULY 2014

day, July 26, join a bevy of beauties and myself at Hamburger Mary’s Long Beach, for an afternoon of cancer awareness and assistance. We will be raising funds for the amazing Belia and Sacks for Life founder Kraig. Both have been kicking cancer in the butt during their ongoing struggles through chemotherapy and recovery— let’s help give them a boost (and keep their lights on). Hamburger Mary’s Long Beach will be hosting the event from 3 to 8 p.m., with phenomenal prizes galore. To add more bang for your buck, a $1 Beer Bust is happening throughout the event and there will also be a star-studded drag show at 4 p.m. featuring some very special characters from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Looks like this month is going to be yet another action-packed doozy! I hope to

see all of you out for a fierce show and standing up for a passionate cause soon. Be the change you want to see in the world. Wishing you all a fabulous July!
