Scientifi c Mission Will Explore One of the Deepest Ocean Trenches An international team of researchers led by deep-sea biologist Tim Shank of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) will use the world’s only full-ocean depth, hybrid remotely operated vehicle, Nereus, and other advanced technology to explore life in the depths of the Kermadec Trench.
on April 12th
The 40-day expedition, which begins , kicks off an ambitious three-
year collaborative effort funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The goal of the project, known as Hadal Eco- system Studies (HADES), is to conduct the
fi rst-ever systematic study of life in ocean trenches, comparing it to the neighboring abyssal plain—fl at areas of the seafl oor usually found at depths between 3,000 and 6,000 meters.
Due to the extreme pressures of these deep-sea environments and the technical challenges involved in reaching them, ocean trenches remain among the least explored environments on the planet.
The multi-disciplinary international science team includes NSF-funded co-prin- cipal investigators Jeff Drazen of the Uni- versity of Hawaii (UH), and Paul Yancey of Whitman College (WC), and international collaborators Malcolm Clark and Ashley
World Famous Sailor Sir Robin Knox-John- ston Announces Return to Solo Ocean Racing
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, 75, will return to his solo ocean racing roots this November when he takes part in French single-handed classic, the Route de Rhum on his Open 60 entry, Grey Power The British founder of the Clipper
Round the World Yacht Race and fi rst ever man to sail solo, non-stop around the world in 1968/69, will compete in the tenth anni- versary edition of the 3,500 mile Transatlan- tic race from St Malo, France to Guadeloupe, which starts on 2 November 2014. Knox-Johnston last did this race in 1982 in his 70-foot catamaran Olympus, better known as Sea Falcon. He is the oldest participant entered so far at the age of 75. Asked why he had chosen a solo Trans- atlantic Race at the age of 75, Knox-John- ston responded: “Participating in the 2013 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race reminded me how much I enjoy the excitement of an ocean race. Solo sailing is where I feel most at home – no one else can benefi t you or let you down – it is all in my hands. The Route de Rhum is one of the classics – it is a very well-run race.”
The race sees sailors cross the Bay of Biscay late in the year in November before reaching the kinder, yet still squally climes of the trade wind belt before fi nishing in the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. The fi rst edition of the race in 1978 was won by Canadian Mike Birch after a nail biting fi nish but was marred by the disap- pearance of French sailor, Alain Colas, who was lost at sea.
The 2014 race is open to mono and mul- tihull boats across four classes with almost 80 entrants. Sir Robin will be racing in the Rhum class and will start serious practice once the current Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fi nishes in July.
Knox-Johnston will celebrate the 45th anniversary of his inaugural circumnaviga- tion on April 22 2014. The solo voyage took 312 days.
He is the chairman and founder of Clip-
per Ventures which runs the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the biannual event which sees amateur sailors from around the world completing a 40,000 mile global circumnavigation.

Another goal of this project is to use telepresence technology aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson to allow the public to share in the discoveries during several live-streaming web events from the seafl oor that will include narration from the science team. The scientists’ work will also be chronicled in video, still images and regu- lar blog updates on the expedition website:

If you have ever seen the sun set or sunrise while out miles at sea you know how the beauty of the ocean and nature can inspire the inner adventurer in us all. The lure of countless travelers to Maine shows how much the rocky coast makes its impression on even the most “land lubber” of individ- uals. I myself as a musician and poet am always seeing and feeling the rhythms of the ocean and coastline no matter where I go. As a performing band we put as much of that inspiration as we can into the music we play for coastal events. The songs I have written about life at sea come from my own experience. Time I have either worked at sea or performed on ships. The vast amount of musicians I have been so fortunate to get to know and perform with from places like Antigua, South America, Mexico and yes even Maine are refl ected in our mu- sic. My band SOUNDWAVZ SEA SIDE EVENTS BAND plays music inspired not only from the coast but by its people. The songs Coastal Route or Miles of memories or Brazilian Rose are original songs about the Ocean or seaside traveler. Of Course we play classic rock and blues and Reggae songs and country classics too. But the true uniqueness and dynamics of the music shines through with the Flamenco and clas- sical Spanish guitar playing of south west
est trenches due to the infl ow of deep-water originating from Antarctica.
What marine animals live in the trench and how do they survive the crushing pres- sures found at that depth —about 15,000 pounds per square inch? These are some of the questions the science team will be trying to answer.
The scientists are hoping to conduct research at 15 stations as part of the expe- dition, including sites in shallow water for testing purposes, sites along the trench axis, and sites in the abyssal plain. At each site, the team will deploy free-falling, full-ocean depth, baited imaging landers (Hadal-land- er) and elevators outfi tted with experimental equipment, including respirometers to see how animal metabolisms function at such great depth and niskin water sampling bottles to investigate microbial activity at

Now we’ve got a 50 slip marina, 30 moorings, fuel dock, restaurant, two bars, a marine store, and a large transient cruising clientele. I can close on the fi rst of November and open fi rst of April.
