bart Race just after Christmas. This project is being overseen by Ken Read, President of North Sails, who will also be her skipper. Building a boat to break records in- volves an extensive design team, coupled with engineers and boatbuilders who make the dream a reality. This boat is 100-feet length overall, 20-foot something beam and weighs 30 tons. She sports a cantilever keel and water-ballast tanks. The designers looked at a lifting keel, but determined that this created too much drag and thus decreased upwind ability. The winches are manually and this the designers have proven will be better than powered winches. The sail plan has not been fi nalized yet. This boat has been compared to the Reichel/Pugh designed WILD OATS XI. However the new boat is wider and deeper, but with her mast stepped further aft she will look different. The designers for this new boat were Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP), along with new star Guillaume Verdier. VPLP is well-known for the multihull designs and two of the most notable are GROUPAMA 3 and BANQUE POPULAIRE V. This combination also took on the IMOCA designs and did well in 2007. In 2012 they combined again and designed MACIF, which won the 2012-13 Vendée Globe singlehanded non-stop race around the world. MACIF not only won the race in under 80 days, but also set the record of 534 miles in one day with an average speed of over 22 knots. When you looked at the bow of MACIF it was fuller than other designs. Verdier tested a number of models and opted

to go with a more traditional bow, not so full. The hope is that this allows the bow to raise out of the water when the boat is planning. Racing in the Vendée Globe you want a boat that sails well close reaching and off-wind sailing. However, this boat was designed with better upwind performance. Her upwind performance is expected to be 13 knots. At 120 degrees true wind in 25 knots of wind her speed should be 30 knots. Hodgdon Yachts has had this boat un- der construction for over half a year. The hull, which is being built to Germanischer Lloyd’s scantlings, has been laid up and the bulkheads and other internal structures are being put in.

One record that they would like to break is the one held by the 140-foot ketch MARI CHA IV set in 2003 for crossing the Atlantic in 6 days, 17 hours and 21 minutes set. BANQUE POPULAIRE, a maxi-cata- maran, holds the overall record for crossing the in about three and a half days. Another record they would like to break is the one day record of 596 nautical miles set by ERICS- SON 4 in 2008-2009. If that is not enough the round the world record is 45 and a half days held by BANQUE POPULAIRE V and they would like to break that too. After competing in the Sydney Hobart race, she also hopes to enter the Caribbean 600, Fastnet, Middle Sea Race, New- port-Bermuda Race, Pineapple Cup, and the Transpac.

The 100-foot maxi racer is a huge job with lots of challenges. Another project is sitting on the dock at Ocean Point Mari-
