TJOHNNY CASH

By Wildman Steve Sometimes the dead never die, and we can

all thank our lucky stars that Johnny Cash is among those who shall live forever, through his incredible contribution to music. We can also thank the short- sightedness of Columbia Records exec- utives, who, for reasons we can only spec- ulate, chose not to release an album Johnny made in 1984, with two tracks he recorded in 1981 in addition to the 10 he recorded with Billy Sherrill produc- ing, and featuring the talents of classic musi- cians like Marty Stuart, Kenny Malone, Hargus “Pig” Robbins and more. John Carter Cash - the talented son of

Johnny and his wife of many years, June Carter Cash - found the master tapes while combing through his parents' archives, which contained a duet with Waylon Jennings and two with June in a collection of songs never heard by the public. They were recorded at a time when Johnny was at a peak of health, spirit and music, but the industry was turning toward a more pop sound and away from au- thentic country, and Mr. Cash was having none of that. When the album was delivered

to Columbia, they found it unimpressive and dropped Cash from the label, and it has re- mained in the vaults until it was unearthed in 2012. Bringing in current Nashville greats such

as Buddy Miller, Pat McLaughlin, Jerry Dou- glas, Laura Cash, Sam Bush, Bryan Sutton and others, John Carter Cash has updated the '80s pro- duction to 21st century stan- dards and the result is noth- ing less than stupendous. Out Among

The Stars is in stores now, and a true gem from beginning to end. Johnny's voice is en- raptured, forceful and as dynamic and electri- fying as it ever was or has been since. The songs are classic, pure country songs that make you wonder how anyone could ignore them, put them on a shelf, and let them sit for 30 years. Out Among The Stars is an absolute must-

have for Cash fans, and also for fans of Way- lon Jennings and June Carter Cash, and definitely a great and worthy addition to any country music fan's collection. •
