Candidates for the Excellence Award dem- onstrate dedication, insight and a high degree of initiative in implementing successful geospa- tial systems. Te award recognizes the accom- plishments of organizations whose success and attention to quality leads others by example. Mr. Clark, in his nomination letter, said “County Judge Lanny Fite and Assessor Jim Crawford knew the value of geospatial tech- nology and conceived a GIS organization that would support all county and city require- ments. Gary Ballard was chosen to take the reins of the newly formed organization. Gary was an experienced and successful project man- ager and IT consultant, prior to taking the job, but had no specific GIS technology education or experience. With the full support of county and city officials, Gary got the operation up and running in a short period of time. Tey imme- diately trimmed the IT budget at the assessor’s

office and, for the first time, coordinated with all stakeholders to implement GIS throughout the entire county business model.” “Te county GIS office is a team effort and this award is for the entire office staff,” said Bal- lard. “I am very proud of every employee in our GIS office. Without their hard work, dedi- cation and capabilities, and the support of Sa- line County elected officials, the success of our office which led to this recognition would not have been possible.” Te GIS office is responsible for, and the cus- todian of, all geographic data sets in the county.
