Full agenda for organics conference

By Judie Steeves C

losing the Loop—Keeping More Income on the Farm is the theme of this year’s Certified Organic Association of B.C. conference in Kamloops March 5 to 7. Administrator Sarah Clark says it was felt that with recessionary times, more competition and a focus on sustainability, this year’s theme would be particularly apt. Keynote speaker is Bill Code, director with the Vancouver Island Heritage Foodservice Co-operative, who was diagnosed at the age of 42 with multiple sclerosis. As a result he became involved with organic foods and farming to help in his healing process. Along the way he learned about value streams and life. The conference will open Sat., Mar. 6 with Code telling his story, then will move into sessions on organic labelling, breaking down market barriers, cover crop research and fertilizer calculators and root crop value streams.

In the afternoon, there will be sessions about on-farm energy alternatives, crop rotation, value streams and value-added products; followed by on-farm energy anerobic digestion, insect pest management and food safety.

The first day will conclude with a session on creation of a whole farm plan and the COABC research fund: the blueberry project and lavender oil project, followed by an organic feast. Sunday morning there will be a session on nematodes, wheat as a crop rotation and ecological goods and services; and one on blueberry research and an introduction to the Organic Farming Institute of B.C. The association’s annual general meeting will follow.
