Assail 70 WP gets pesticide registration

trawberry growers will have a new weapon against aphids, tarnished plant bugs and leafhoppers this year, with the insecticide Assail 70 WP registered for that use in December. They’re advised to contact provincial extension service staff or professional consultants to determine the appropriate threshold levels for treatment in their area. Adequate spray coverage is essential for optimal control.

It’s not recommended that you make more than two applications per season, more than once every seven days, less than one day before harvest or during bloom, according to the label.


Blueberry growers will have a new tool for control of annual grasses, wild oats, volunteer cereals and quackgrass with registration in December of Poast Ultra. It should be applied at a pre- harvest interval of 15 days. Two other pesticides are currently being reviewed by Health Canada and could be registered in time for the 2010 season, but neither is yet registered, said Caroline Bedard, provincial minor use coordinator for the agri-food protection branch of the agriculture ministry.


The insecticide Rimon 10 EC for control of tarnished plant bug in strawberries and the miticide Acramite 50 WS for control of mites in raspberries, are two new uses currently in the last stage of the review by Health Canada. There are also submissions for two other herbicides, a fungicide and a miticide, but they are currently in review by Health Canada for use on berry crops, and haven’t yet been registered for use. the active ingredient glufosinate ammonium is being reviewed by Health Canada for registration for blueberries.


As well, the herbicide Dual Magnum with the active ingredient s-metolachlor, for control of weeds in blueberries and strawberries, is in review, as is the herbicide Select with the active ingredient


clethodim, for control of grasses in blueberries.


The fungicide Aliette with the active ingredient fosetyl aluminum, for control of phytophthora and anthractnose in blueberries, and the miticide Kanemite with the active ingredient acequinocyl, for control of mites on raspberries, are also both in the review process.
