Springfield Dedicates Harold C. Smith Room


SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE dedicated the Harold C. Smith Room at the Stitzer YMCA Center in Judd Gymnasia during a recent ceremony. The Harold C. Smith Room was named for the longtime College trustee and YMCA visionary. Many prominent leaders from the YMCA and the College attended the event.

Springfield College and Kokugakuin University Hokkaido Junior College Continue Cooperative Agreement


Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, from left, Kokugakuin University Hokkaido Junior College President Hiroshi Tamura, Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, and Takikawa City, Hokkaido, Japan, Mayor Kokichi Maeda signed the agreement.


SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE and Kokugakuin University Hokkaido Junior College, Japan, signed a continuing agreement of collaboration recently at Marsh Memorial. The two have been sister schools since they signed the original agreement in 2010, a collaboration that includes scholarly research, faculty and student exchange, and the sharing of curricular information.


Strength and Conditioning Master’s Program Recognized by National Association


THE STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING master’s program has been recognized as a National Strength and Conditioning Association Education Recognition Program (ERP) Graduate Studies Program. Only 11 institutions in the United States are recog-


nized as ERP Graduate Studies Programs and Springfield College is the only one to be recognized as an applied curricular program. The undergraduate program for strength and conditioning is also an ERP, as well as a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health and Education program.


Vice President Jean Wyld Elected CIHE Chair


vICE PRESIDENT for Academic Affairs Jean A. Wyld, Ph.D., was elected chair of the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). As chair of CIHE, Wyld will provide leadership for the commission in its work of developing and applying the standards for accreditation that govern the nearly 300 public and private colleges and universities in New England and abroad accredited by NEASC. She also will serve on the NEASC board of trustees to represent the needs of higher education in the New England region and to external groups.


Springfield College and Beijing Sport University Host Joint Forum on Higher Education


SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE and Beijing Sport University (BSU) collaborated to host a forum on higher education on the campus in December. President Richard B. Flynn and Beijing Sport University President Yang Hua opened the forum that included a joint sharing of information on different aspects of higher education in both the United States and China. Members of the BSU delega- tion who participated are Yang; Director of Academic Affairs Gao Feng; Director of Organization Department Xu Xing; Dean of Graduate School Li Mingqin; and Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Dong Mei.


GAEtAno AmAto ‘53, pre-practicum coordi- nator for physical education, recently released his new children’s book But Not Always. The book connects children with the world of sport by acquainting them with a wide variety of activi- ties involving the use of balls and encourages them to be more physi- cally active, enhance their reading ability, and challenge their creative minds as they explore the sports of their choice. Amato has been recognized as the Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Eastern District Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and his article, “What’s Great About Gym,” was published by Parents Magazine.
