Lawrence Of Arabia and Your Blank Canvas

By Daniel Sullivan • danielsullivan.speech@yahoo.com Daniel Sullivan

SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ Steven Spielberg once said that before he goes to work on any new movie, the first thing that he does is watch Lawrence Of Arabia to get his inspirational gears mov- ing. I couldn’t think of a better kick starter. Every morning we wake up, we start the day with blank canvas, and like a painter we fill in that canvas. The things we do, the people we interact with, all the choices we make are what fills in that canvas. And like any good painter we need

inspiration, something that gets our minds moving. For some people, it’s that first ritualistic cup of coffee, their favorite song, the morning news, or that jog in the morning right before the sun peaks over the horizon. For me it has always been the movies. For this, I’ll often go to

the movies alone, the 11 am show, before anyone else would even think about sitting in a dark room. The lights go down and the screen is illuminated. First with coming attractions, I’m already making mental notes about other films I want to see. Then the film starts and I am immersed. Whether it’s a big sweeping opening, soft titles, or hard cut intro, I am now a part of this ride. For the next 90 minutes I’ve accepted an invitation to be a part of this world. To breath, feel, live, and die with these char-

acters and share in their victories and looses.

Film making is a wonderfully unique art as it is the efforts of so many different people work- ing to the same end, to tell you this story. Like a symphony of sight, sound, and feeling, this is truly the collaborative art. The writer weaves a tale of words that will serve as a blueprint to the director and actors who interpret those words to the best of their abilities and portray this

story

they’ve been hand- ed. The composer writes a score that

will set the tone and pace, and the editor will look at all of it. One thousand people who have all told the same story their own way and make those one thou- sand voices one. With the work of so many people to create one piece of art, movies are a brilliant reflection of where we as a soci- ety are, how we view the past, and our lofty ideas for the future, how we felt about a time and how we feel about now.

When the lights come

up, the first thing I need is my notebook. After being a part of someone else's adventure and returned safely, I feel that a few things have been knocked loose and I’m ready to start filling in my canvas. I can only imag- ine Spielberg may feel the same from time to time.
