SporT Tennis and judo centre for St Albans
New tennis and judo facil- ities have been approved for Batchwood Gol f & Tennis Centre in St Albans, Hertfordshire, to replace facil- ities that were devastated in a 2011 arson attack. As the development is on
green belt land, the plan- ning application, which was approved by the council, had to be referred to the secretary of state, Eric Pickles. He has decided not to call
in the application, clearing the way for the council to proceed with the development. Te facility will include six indoor tennis

courts - an increase on the four in the previ- ous facility - and a new home for the St Albans Judo Club. Te tennis and judo facilities repre- sent the second stage in the refurbishment of the new facilities, with permission for new golf and lawn bowls granted in October 2012 and
the council currently in the process of appoint- ing a contractor to rebuild these. Insurance money will cover some of the
costs of the rebuild but funding is also being sought from Sport England’s Iconic Facilities Fund, the Lawn Tennis Association and other sources. Details:

Isle of Man targets extreme sport tourism
Manx tourism officials are looking to diver- sify the economy of the Isle of Man by pushing extreme sport tourism. Director of
Manxtreme.com, Simon Crellin,
is working with tourism officials to push sports such as sea kayaking, mountain biking, open-
water swimming and coasteering, making the most of the island’s natural resources such as mountains, coastline and mountain bike trails. The island already has a busy calendar of events, including the Sleepwell end2end moun- tain bike race. Details:

Sportscotland plans performance centre
Sportscotland has invited councils, educational insti- tutions and other interested parties to bid to host the coun- try’s first National Performance Centre for Sport. A steering group, led by
Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan, has decided on the bid crite- ria and timetable, which will receive up to £25m of gov- ernment support, and will be completed by 2016. Stewart Harris, CEO of
