EDITOR’S NOTE WHAT’S NEW?
NEW DEVELOPMENTS As it follows the July 1 start date for new federal regulations, our late summer issue is focused on those happenings. DLA Piper law firm’s Dennis Cariello provides us with a cogent analysis of the current and ever-changing landscape: the government’s involvement in accountability and innovation. While the courts have taken a bite out of some of the more contentious attempts to regulate the education sector, Sallie Mae’s Kelly Christiano reminds us that there are still plenty of vexing compliance issues.
NEW MODELS Higher education, here in the States and around the world, has done a remarkable job of dealing with the economic realities, societal changes and government burden. Timothy Loomer from Campus Management reports that Brazil, a long-time student of the US, can now teach its neighbor to the north a thing or two about the positive role government can have. Ingram’s Kent Freeman notes that technology has not only lowered cost through e-textbooks, but that e-content is the real game changer. Even the old college dorm bulletin board has had a makeover. Now students can swap and sell through CampusWall, a kind of Craigslist unique to an individual school.
NEW VOICES Closer to home, our own Rachel Wiley, who was an editorial asset behind the scenes, has stepped out to manage Today’s Campus’ stable of writers and pen a couple of pieces herself, including the LGBTQ Profile in Diversity. We welcome Christopher Tremblay, Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management at the University of Michigan–Dearborn, who contributes some thoughts on attracting and managing gay students in a companion piece to Rachel’s. And something that we have been working on for some time–a student’s voice. Amanda Bardonner, a senior and interna- tional business major at St. Cloud State University, speaks out about student debt.
