TECHNOLOGY

At Vital Source, we surveyed students who are using our platform and the results: Forty-seven percent said that if price and availability were the same, they would prefer e-textbooks because of portability, search, copy/paste and multimedia. Tirty-Five percent of students would use a combination.

Te outstanding question is, considering all of the

excitement and possibilities, how do educators and institutions begin to implement real changes, yet avoid what’s called “the trough of disillusionment” that often occurs with new technologies?

We advise institutions to consider two steps: man-

age through a transition and pick partners to support goals. It’s not necessary to jump from print all the way to interactive e-textbooks overnight. In fact, many educators may not ever want to go all the way. Te best solution may be a combination. Te best partners are innovating in digital but also in print, allowing schools to experiment with technology, and helping manage the transition effectively and cost efficiently.
