QUALITY IN TOUGHER TIMES

The Spanish pool building market is turning to quality in tougher financial times – that was the key trends highlighted in an eve of show report on the state of the country’s pool and spa market.

Concrete pools are becoming popular in a Spanish market where the 2011 figures show there are 1,100,844 swimming pools – one for every 22 homes. The report, commissioned by show organisers Piscina BCN and FAPS, the country’s pool building association, says that turnover for the industry is €1.190m and with half of the pools in Spain over 10 years old the sector has had to focus on maintenance and renovation.

The study highlights that the economic crisis has provoked changes in consumer habits and in the reasons Spanish people are investing in pools. The number one reason is now seen as investment in the home with health and relaxation no longer as important as it was.

New pool building in Spain remained static in 2011 with exported products helping to maintain growth in an industry which has 2,000 companies and employs 51,000 workers.

The report stresses just how important renovation and maintenance work is. “Swimming pools older than 10 years make up for 52% of the total of all Spanish pools. This fact has brought a real opportunity for the industry given that new technology and energy saving options are being sold into the older pool markets and offering substantial savings and better systems.” The growth in concrete pools in linked to longevity and safety says the report. In Spain there is still a great desire to own a pool. Seven out of 10 home owners aspire to owning a pool when the economy improves whereas two years ago the figure was 56%.

The report called ‘Baseline Study on the Swimming Pool Sector in Spain 2011’ was compiled by Market ADD.
