Ducks’ Learn to Play Program Returns Presented by Reebok, the sessions help introduce more young kids to hockey

T

he Anaheim Ducks’ Learn to Play Hockey program, presented by Reebok, is back this season and it’s bigger and better than ever.

The program gives first-time hockey players the chance to get on the rink - ice or inline - in full Reebok hockey equipment for FREE!

Participants receive instruction from the Anaheim Jr. Ducks’ coaching staff on how to skate properly while implementing some of the basic skills used in hockey, such as passing, shooting and stickhandling.

A number of familiar hockey personalities have been known to stop by and lend a helping hand at the clinics, from Ducks television announcers John Ahlers and Brian Hayward to former Ducks player Jason Marshall to the Ducks’ mascot, Wild Wing.

The Learn to Play program sessions run four weeks long and are designed for participants 10 years old and younger. Participants are provided with all the equipment needed, including a bag, helmet, shin guards, hockey pants, elbow pads, shoulder pads, gloves, stick and jersey, which they get to keep during the

duration of the session, allowing them the opportunity to practice on their own if they choose between lessons. Skate rentals are also provided for free at each rink. The use of full hockey equipment allows participants to get the feel of skating in a real game, allowing them to experience the sport with the necessary protection to keep them safe on the rink.

The Ducks started the Learn to Play program to give more kids the opportunity to experience the sport of hockey with no financial commitment.

One of the major hurdles for parents whose kids expressed an interest in playing was the upfront costs of gear and registration, which can easily amount to over $500, without getting a chance to try the sport and realize if it was something they wanted to pursue.

The Learn to Play program now gives kids the opportunity to experience hockey in a fun, group environment for four weeks with no out-of-pocket expense. Since its inception in 2009, over 500 kids have participated in the Learn to Play program. This year, The
