ARTSWESTCHESTER TO SHOWCASE LOCAL ARTISTS By Alison Kattleman

Experience the art of shopping—literally! Beginning this fall, Westchester residents can enjoy public art and an emporium’s worth of entertainment as the Cross County Shopping Center (CCSC) in Yonkers celebrates its recent major renovation project with a “RE-launch Celebration Week,” October 11-16. As part of the celebrations, the CCSC has formed a relationship with ArtsWestchester that allows local artisans to showcase their art at the shopping center throughout the year.

“As a destination that draws millions of visitors each year, we felt that it was important to form this innovative partnership with ArtsWestchester to both support the art community and provide a memorable experience at the shopping center,” said Liz Pollack, marketing director for Macerich, the property’s management company.

About Five Hundred Hands, Eric Wildrick

The first local artist to have work shown at the center will be Eric Wildrick, technical director and adjunct assistant professor of sculpture at the School of Art + Design at Purchase College. Wildrick, who primarily works in metal, has created pieces for private collections throughout Westchester. His work can also be seen enhancing the campus landscape

at Purchase, where he has taught and worked for 33 years.

The sculptures he will be installing at the Cross County Shopping Center site, “About Eighty Hands,” and “About Five Hundred Hands,” were formed out of found tools to create what the artist refers to as “small monuments to people who work with their hands” – a theme that fits well with the manual labor that has gone into the extensive renovation at the shopping center.

“The reference to ‘hands’ is a powerful one for me,” said Wildrick, “as I am deeply moved by the connections I imagine these hands must have had with those tools I have chosen to work with.”

The sculptures will be unveiled in the center court of the shopping center on Thursday, October 13, at 6pm.

“ArtsWestchester has an incredible mission to make art accessible to Westchester County residents, and Cross County Shopping Center is an excellent venue to help accomplish this goal,” said Pollack. “We are looking forward to hosting a variety of art-related events and functions in the future, from art shows to fashion and art exhibits, to concerts and theater performances, and much more!”
