25TH
ANNUAL MARYLAND HORSEMEN’S PARTY You’re Rita Anselmo
Maryland 4-H Horse Program Volunteer of the Year Rita became involved with 4-H in 1996 when her three joined the Meadowbrook Misfits 4-H Club. The children have graduated 4-H, yet Rita, John and her children continue to volunteer. They help 4-Hers compete on the children’s former project horses, volunteer for Horse Jamboree, Horse Bowl, Horse Judging competitions, the Maryland 4-H Horsemanship Standards Program and both County and State Fairs.
What Rita is known for most as a volunteer is her tireless
effort to raise money for the 4-H Horse Program. Rita has served as the chair for the silent auction for many years gathering and storing donations for many months, creating a catalogue, and ensuring that the auction runs smoothly.
Why put yourself through all of the madness, you might ask? She does this because 4-H provides opportunities to members that may not always have the means to attend competitions at the National level without funding. She enjoys hearing 4-H’ers returning from Nationals talking about their experiences to the younger club members.
She has been a tireless mentor to many 4-H families and their children at a county level over the years and continues to support the Maryland 4-H Horse Program and other events at the state level. Thank you Rita, and congratulations for being the 2011 Maryland 4-H Horse Program Volunteer of the Year.

Maryland 4-H Horse Program Youth Development Award The list of things that Jim Steele has not accomplished is very short. This jack of all trades has successfully managed Shamrock Farm in Woodbine for 34 years, served as a staunch advocate for agriculture in Maryland, been a successful breeder of Thoroughbreds, and (perhaps most importantly) become an active supporter of the 4-H Program.
Mr. Steele’s interest in 4-H stems from his own participation in the 4-H and FFA programs in Kentucky- his home state. His experience with horses materialized into a job at Gainesway Farm, which opened the door for him to
come to Maryland and manage Shamrock Farm in 1977.
In his time in Maryland, Mr. Steele has made an impact as the current Chairman of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, President of the Carroll County Farm Bureau, and a board member of the Maryland Farm Bureau. He has held positions with the MD Horse Breeders Association, MD Agricultural Commission and Carroll County Ag Commission. He is a former member of the Committee to Review Ag Land Preservation and the governor’s special commission to study slots and gaming in Maryland.
Mr. Steele has opened his farm to the Maryland Hippology Team annually since 1987. He can always be seen at the Horsemen’s Party and speaking for 4-H whenever possible. He has often offered 4-H’ers the opportunity to learn about breeding through experience at Shamrock Farm with internships.
He is an irreplaceable force in the equine industry that the 4-H Program is very thankful to have as an alumnus that continually gives back. Congratulations to Jim Steele for being the 2011 Maryland 4-H Program’s Youth Development Award Winner!
