Do you think the UK media at times forgets about the middle ground of growth businesses and instead focus too much on the massive successes and failures? If so, what can the public, government, media and SMB’s themselves do to promote and grow Britain’s SMB’s?

I think over the last 5 years the British media have given good support to the business sector. There are various dedicated specialist magazines and online specialist websites which are supported by the likes of Dragons’ Den and The Apprentice. I think the UK has a strong awareness of the business community and to have one of the largest department of government called Business, Innovation and Skills, in itself speaks volumes.

On the 27th September you will be speaking at the Entrepreneur Country Accelerate Forum. What are James Caan’s ‘Top 3 Tips’ to SMB’s for accelerating their business growth. On the flip- side what do you think are the biggest hindrances to viable businesses scaling and growing? Although you may feel you have ideas that you are passionate and excited about make sure you consider the following;

Tip 1: Your ideas should be commercially viable

Tip 2: Before you commit substantial

financial resources, please ensure there is genuine interest in the market. This must be done thoroughly by talking to real potential buyers opposed to family and friends, where there is a demonstratable interest and appetite for your proposition.

Tip 3: Very rarely do businesses succeed. For business to succeed it generally requires a range of complimentary styles in order to maximise the potential. Before launching please ensure you have key components in place to give every chance of success.

You’ve completed a successful stint on the Dragon’s Den, what are the current and future projects for James Caan? As mentioned I have recently released a new Business Secrets app for the iphone and it is soon to be release on the android platform. The app gives entrepreneurs and business owners tips and advice across all aspects of business from hiring the right talent to exited a business. During the summer my free time was spent finalising the details of my new book ‘Start Your Business In 7 Days’ which is due to be released early next year. I work on a daily basis with all the companies in the Hamilton Bradshaw portfolio as well as working with The JCF on my philanthropic projects.
