1. UK Rioters

It is estimated that retailers and small business lost more than 7,500 hours of trading and 11,000 members of their staff were affected by the violence caused by the riots in London in early August.

Business groups have been submitting data on the impact of the mindless criminal damage and violence as part of the impact assessments being used in the trials of alleged offenders. It is hoped that direct evidence from those most affected will prove that attacks on retailers are not victimless.

2. Talk-Talk Talk-talk has been in the news for all the wrong reasons the last couple of weeks, despite its high profile marketing campaign as sponsor of the latest series of the X-Factor. Industry regulator Ofcom first censured the company back in November 2010 over incorrect charges before last month levying an additional £3m fine for continuing to bill customers for non-existent services even after being told off for doing so.

Adding insult to injury TalkTalk has just increasing the cost of line rental to 9.5% to £13.80 from October.

3. Alistair Darling Gordon Brown’s former Chancellor Alistair Darling, has been causing a storm with the serialization of his memoirs “Back From The Brink: 1,000 Days At Number 11”. In them the usually mild- mannered Darling extracts revenge on the former Prime Minister and his closest aides, many of whom occupy front-bench positions in the current Labour shadow cabinet. Brown will forever be remembered as one of Britain’s least successful Prime Ministers but Darlings revelations are likely to ensure at least for now that Brown’s successor Ed Miliband may never get the opportunity as it paints the picture of a parliamentary Labour Party, wrecked by infighting, hell- bent on self destruction, driven by egomaniacs.

4. Scottish Devolution Referendum

Chair of CBI Scotland, Linda Urquhart last week added to the growing concern being expressed about the SNP’s commitment to a referendum and its timing, calling ongoing speculation of the move and the likely options to be put to voters ‘to be put beyond doubt’.
