casual dining restaurant is open 24 hours and offers a modern, upscale interpretation of the original boxcar diner, serving up homely fare in retro surroundings of tile flooring, wood panelling and velvet-detailed booths
the suspended crystal glass globes above the reception desk are custom-designed by Studio Gaia to add another dimension to these respective areas. Alongside Scarpetta, an atmospheric dining
venue rich in wood, leather banquettes, oversized glass lighting fixtures and complete with outdoor pavilion, guests can find a more casual atmosphere at The Counter, open 24 hours. Although the majority of the hotel development is a newbuild, this portion has seen the salvaging and reconstruction of a rough Art Deco façade, once home to Crangle’s Collision automotive repair shop. Fittingly the developer has elected to place a modern, upscale interpretation of the original boxcar diner within this outlet, serving up homely fare in retro surroundings of tile flooring, wood panelling and velvet-detailed booths. As a further nod to the district’s history, medals, old weapons and paintings have been playfully incorporated into the décor of 1812 club and lounge, found beneath entrance level, acknowledging the proximity of the heritage park at Victoria Memorial
Square, which was a burial ground for soldiers of a bygone era. Installed with the local film and media industries in mind, flexible event spaces include a plush screening room and boardroom also positioned within this lower level, which are adorned with more glimmering lighting fixtures and artwork by David Drebin.
In the guestrooms, the drama is dialled
down, resulting in casual accommodation that continues some of the lobby’s interior themes including hardwood flooring, custom millwork for built-in cabinetry and floor-to-ceiling windows.
“As in the lobby, we have accented eclectic
fabrics with the striking signature red-orange colour, used here for lamps and a custom- designed lounge chair,” comments Rosita. “Full-height frosted glass between the carrara marble bathroom and bedroom creates a sexy, voyeuristic yet elegant experience.” Meanwhile, a cool white palette, rich woods and fashion prints by David Drebin reign supreme in the suites, including the 2,100ft2 Penthouse with its own pool table.
