The Executive Office Has Moved by David B. Walls, CAE, CMP

The MTLA Executive Office has been

located in Baltimore for many years but now the offices are being relocated to the central part of the state. During the packing process I ran

across a lot of old documents and I was able to piece together the history of our previous locations. Being a bit of a history buff, I found the timeline to be very interesting. I found out that in the beginning, outgoing Presidents would pass boxes of records to the Incoming Presidents and the operations of the organization was mainly carried out from the sitting President’s office. In the summer of 1979 the organization moved to an office at 222 St. Paul Place; in the summer of 1985 the organization was at 201 E Preston Street; in the fall of 1991 the organization was at 1018 N Charles Street; in 2001 the organization moved to its current location at 120 W Faytette Street. Each location had its own unique charm and character. With our lease expiring at the end

of 2008 the MTLA board created an Ad Hoc committee in the spring of 2007 to evaluate the organization’s op- tions. Considering the long history and connections to the city, an enormous amount of time was spent researching and discussing the organization’s op- tions. The Board did not come to this decision quickly or without a lot of thought. The conclusion to move away from the city and to the central part of the state was a decision made based on a key factor of the organization – its members. Part of the committee’s work included

research of where our members are lo- cated. This was done by analyzing the zip codes of members and their offices. Through a complicated mathematical calculation and triangulation of location to distance, the committee concluded

Fall 2008

that collectively, the most central loca- tion to the majority of its members was in Columbia, Maryland. Many locations were considered, but the final location was chosen because of its central loca- tion and its access from major travel arteries. Change in any form is difficult. But

change can provide many positive ben- efits. Aside from its quick access from Interstate 95, Routes 175, 29, and 100, this new location provides ample free parking. For anyone visiting downtown Baltimore, you know that parking is a premium and we all pay dearly. The new office also provides a spacious room for seminars, section and committee meet- ings; a larger board room for those that want to use the space for meetings and depositions (free to members); and ad- ditional space for employees, some who have shared their office with storage items and the copier. The Association will continue to reach

out to its members by hosting seminars, events, and visits across the state. We will continue to bring you the benefits

and programs that help you help your clients. Help us spread the word and re- mind your office mates, staff and fellow members of our new address, telephone and facsimile numbers. Once the move is complete and all the

boxes have been unpacked and all the items put in their place, I look forward to seeing you at our open house. n
