Charles Shaw 1917-2011
Charles Shaw of Harrogate died peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 5. “Charlie” and his brother Jack had been a
principal part of the Harrogate antiques trade since 1946. The Shaw brothers started trading after the
Second World War, Jack having served in the RAF and Charles for over six years in the army.
They started their business buying secondhand jewellery and watches, initially selling their stock at Knaresborough market. They soon expanded, taking stalls at Ripon, Northallerton, Doncaster and Thirsk, with Charlie spending most of his time out on the road buying stock. In 1950 they opened at Harrogate market and
from there it was a small step to the acquisition of their first shop at 5 St James Street, Harrogate, soon establishing them as one of the major jewellery and silver dealers in the North of England. Charlie and his brother moved to 21 Montpellier
Parade, Harrogate, just below Betty’s tearooms, in 1967, helping to establish this part of Harrogate as the centre for the growing antiques trade. Charlie retired in 1995, after nearly 50 years in
the trade, selling his entire stock over two days at Tennants’ salerooms in Leyburn. He was well known and liked amongst the
Harrogate trade – a familiar figure calling in many of the shops until recently, always asking about interesting and quality stock. He is survived by his wife Maureen.
