French inducted into 2010 SJ Baseball Hall of Fame

The Historical Society of

Moorestown has been notified by the Hot Stovers Baseball Club of South Jersey that the late Walter French, who was highlighted in HSM’s Sports Legends of Moorestown exhibit, was induct- ed into the 2010 Class of the South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame. The group held its 51st an- nual awards dinner on Nov. 27. Walter French was born in

Moorestown in 1899. He was a direct descendant of

one of the town’s founding fa- thers, and lived in Moorestown until 1930. He attended Rutgers and after two years transferred to West Point where he played base- ball, football and basketball. He went head to head with the

legendary George Gipp in a mem- orable football game against Notre Dame in 1920, and in 1922, he was named to the All-Ameri- can football team.

In 1923, the Philadelphia Ath- letics baseball team signed Wal- ter to a contract. After two years in the minors,

1925 would be- come a year to re- member for French.

He

moved up to the major leagues, became a mem- ber of Connie Mack’s Philadel- phia A’s, and was the leading pinch hitter in the majors batting .370.

In 1923 and 1924, Walter also

played in the National Football League for the Rochester, NY franchise, but at the conclusion of the 1925 baseball season Walter joined the NFL’s newest team, the Pottstown Maroons, where he led the league in yards per carry. The 1925 NFL season and the

Maroons would be connected to a controversy that still exists today. At the end of the year, the 9-2 Ma- roons were in the championship game with the Chicago Cardi- nals. In that game, French scored two touchdowns in a 21-7 victory. The Chicago Tribune wrote, “The
