sure. But so is their trainer. Ross McLaughlin knows what he’s doing. It’s obvious in every move he makes. He has been well trained himself, and his learning never ends. He and Laurel both attend seminars constantly. They belong to Retriever clubs. Their world is working dogs and friends of working dogs. They were both military
people. Laurel was a lieutenant- colonel in the air force, and Ross was an army major. They lived in Nanaimo, B.C., raised their son, Tripp, were posted to the Ottawa area, and retired in the 90s. They didn’t know, way back then, that their lives would be filled with handsome four-legged friends. The whole thing began, really,
when Ross was on tour in the Middle East in ‘88-’89. Laurel was visiting in Kingston. She fell in love with a black lab puppy, and she bought it. Ross didn’t know about it… yet. Tripp, then 5, named the puppy
Josie. Laurel piled Josie, Tripp and herself into a truck, and then they drove all the way to Nanaimo. She remembers the trip well –
