The ‘Big Four’ in education Extensive research has
proven that there are at least four powerful partners that our youth must have in order for them to compete and suc- ceed in today’s world:
1) STRONG SCHOOL
LEADER: The research is ex- tensive and from many sourc- es, but they all say the same thing. A school’s success starts with its leader.
Therefore, the first place
to look is not the classroom, the gym or to see if the halls are clean. We parents must look for and demand a strong school leader who will drive excellence in the classroom and out to the homes.
2) INVOLVED PARENTS:
In every town, city, state and country, regardless of race, or income, the evidence is the same. When parents and teachers are on the same team, and students that, everybody wins.
The problem is what to do
when such a relationship does not exist.
In Patrick Dolan’s words,
school people have to involve parents in as many activities as possible and “work through the discomfort of each other’s presence.”
Effective schools use their
internal collaborative strength to seek out relationships with parents and the community. They see parents more as part of the solution than as part of the problem. They pursue pro- grams and activities that are based on two-way relationship building in order to mobilize the resources of both the com- munity and the school in the service of learning.
3) PASSIONATE TEACH-
ERS: The colorful and brilliant Don King once said, “If a man sets himself on fire, the world will come watch him burn.”
I say, “When teachers set
themselves on fire with enthu- siasm, the students will come see them burn.”
Information alone is not
enough to educate today’s informed and busy youth. School improvement will never occur on a wide scale until the majority of teachers become motivators and educators.
In order for teachers to
have a chance against 3D video games, rappers, sex and gangs, their lessons must come off the pages and the chalk board and into the hearts and minds of today’s youth.

PAREN-T-EEN TIPS By Carlos Johnson
4) AFTER-SCHOOL PRO-
GRAMS: We all have heard it said by grandma: “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” Once again she was right.
• Students who spend no time in extracurricular activities are 49 percent more likely to use drugs.
I could go on and on but I
think you get the point. Don’t argue with Grandma,
keep your child constructively busy and they will do con- structive things.
Paren-t-een Tip of the Week:
If you want your child to learn look for a strong school leader, if you want them to act right, get involved. If we want kids to stay out of trouble, get them in a program.
