For the past 15 years, the Women of Color in STEM Conference has cel- ebrated the women whose staggering accomplishments have done nothing less than change the ways we live. These women have contributed to our nation’s defense by land, air, and sea, and they have taken us beyond the stars. They have developed the information technologies that keep global powerhouses humming, and they have shaped the ways people

and corporations communicate. They stand on the shoulders of the brave women who dared to transcend their times, who believed in the power of their abilities and the courage of their convictions. Women like Ruth Bia Moore, who survived the brutality of segrega- tion to become the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in the natural sciences; like May Edward Chinn, the daughter of a run- away slave, she became a doctor, making advancements in cancer research at Harlem Hospital.

15th yr Anniversary

Women of Color magazine, and the Women of Color in STEM Con- ference, were created so that stories of heroic women wouldn’t be forgotten. 15 years is a long time, but it is only a drop in the fath- omless sea of history. The impact of the accomplishments of WOC award winners like Dr. Chon-Yin Tsai, whose work on submarine missle systems effectively helped end the Cold War, will continue to ripple through time. 15 years of WOC awardees have gifted us with 15 years of inspirational stories with origins all over the world. Former Technologists of the Year Duy-Loan T. Le and Sherita Ceasar came from war-ravaged Vietnam and Chicago’s South Side, respectively; they took very different paths to the pages of Women of Color magazine and the podium at their Women of Color confer- ences, and yet the magnitude of their achievements unites them with the steady procession of other talented women in STEM.

This year, we champion the ingenuity of a new group of Women of Color honorees, and, in doing so, we invite them into something that is more than a tradition of achievement, formidable as that is. We invite them into a lasting legacy, one that began long before the inaugural issue of Women of Color magazine ever went to press, or the curtain first lifted on the Women of Color in STEM Conference. A legacy that continues whenever a young girl is encouraged in an early love of science and math, when a student majoring in STEM is given respect and attention by her teachers, and when an enterpris- ing technologist is given a chance to prove herself in the boardroom and the lab, on a naval vessel and in an executive office. We con- gratulate this year’s winners, the winners from years past, and the generations of winners to come.
