Organic Shopper News Happenings

A Special Note from Avi & Morgon Sommerville World’s Best Carrot Cake!

The impact that Organicfest and Organic Shopper has had on Worlds Best Carrot Cake has been tremendous. When Worlds Best Carrot Cake was a new company we attended the first ever Organicfest. We came with many pieces of our 100% organic carrot cake and were able to introduce it to many people. As the first Organicfest was almost over, a man came up to our booth and bought a piece of our cake. He stood there and ate his piece of cake and when he had finished he introduced himself as a buyer at Earth- fare!! He said they would like to buy our cake for his stores. This was in 2005. We have been selling our 5 varieties of cake to all 18 stores ever since.

We can’t emphasize enough the positive impact of Organicfest on our business. We have also had articles written by Debi in her Organic Shopper Magazine. We have had ads in Organic Shop- per Magazine which have brought us many website orders from their loyal readers. As Organicfest has grown, so have we. And it is in part due to the connections that have come from being a sponsor and friend of Organicfest. We salute Debi and Tom for the phenomenal job that they do to educate people about the importance of an Organic and “Natural LifestyIe”! !

Terra Summer ~ Thinking through Food The Most Delicious Summer Camp for Kids!

Terra Summer is an experiential, out-of-the-box 4-week day camp that uses the magical world of food and the story behind what we eat to get young teenagers to think about their place in the world, the connections among the peoples and species, and the great impact that they can have as individuals. Everything at Terra is anchored to food – our farming time learning to grow our vegetables; our cooking time in our sunny state-of-the-art kitchen classroom; and our group discussion time, when we learn about the history of food, how our food system works, and how our food is produced. Interwoven through it all are history, geography, and plant and food science. The daily cooking time with the chef teaches chil- dren cooking skills, empowers them to embrace new flavors and experiences, and helps them develop a healthy, mindful relationship to food. We also discuss many important environmental, social, and economic issues related to food and food production. We eat together, make food art, work on a food-related portfolio project, and take fun food-related field trips. Terra is a vegetarian program. We are located on an organic farm in Mills River.

Terra Summer is for children 11-14. Session I: June 14-July 9; Session II: July 19 -August 13. The cost is $880 per session. Children attend from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Mon- day through Friday. Applications are available online at Scholarships and transportation are available. For more information contact Sybil Fix at 828-782-7842 or or visit Terra Summer on the web:
