Judge Damon Keith

honored at International Civil Rights Walk of Fame

The International Civil Rights Walk of Fame was

established in 2004 as “a permanent tribute to the brave warriors of justice who sacrificed and strug- gled to make equality a reality for all.” Located at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, it is a partnership between the National Parks Service and the Trumpet Awards Founda- tion.

In January, the latest class of inductees was

honored, including Detroit’s own Judge Damon Keith. He has served as a judge of the Sixth Cir- cuit Court of Appeals since 1977 and is known as a defender of constitutional and civil rights. Among his most notable decisions: United States v Sin- clair, in which he ruled that President Nixon and the federal government couldn’t engage in warrant- less wiretapping (a decision unanimously affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court); in Detroit Free Press v Ashcroft, he ruled that the George W. Bush admin- istration couldn’t conduct deportation hearings in secret whenever the government asserted that those involved might be linked to terrorism; and in Davis v School District of Pontiac, Keith ordered the implementation of citywide busing to promote integration.

Other inductees included the National Newspa-

per Publishers Association, which was represent- ed by Chairman Danny J. Bakewell, Sr.

The NNPA is a 69-year old federation of more

than 200 Black newspapers, which has served as the industry’s news service.

Nationally recognized pre-law program for underserved

college students comes to Michigan

Leaders from the Thomas

M. Cooley Law School and Oakland University (OU) are partnering with the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Coun- cil on Legal Education Oppor- tunity (CLEO) to bring CLEO’s nationally recognized pre- law program to underserved Michigan college students this summer.

The first-ever of its kind

to be offered in Michigan, CLEO’s Sophomore Summer Institute will provide inten- sive, academic coursework to 25 Michigan undergraduate students at Cooley’s Auburn Hills campus from June 1 to June 30. Applications: http:// www.cleoadmin.com/pre_law_ programs/ssionlineMI.cfm. The program aims to help dis- advantaged groups build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in law school. It will be offered at no cost to the students, as CLEO, Cooley and OU will provide the sup- port needed for the program.

“The Sophomore Summer

Institute reflects CLEO’s mis- sion of diversifying the legal profession by expanding legal education opportunities to mi- nority, low-income and disad- vantaged groups,” said CLEO executive director Cassandra Ogden. “The program ensures that the legal profession is diversified with underserved populations who, despite scarce resources, have a con- tinued burning desire to over- come any obstacles and attend law school. And, to ultimately become attorneys who ardent- ly work for and impact the social justice system. We are

excited about partnering with Thomas M. Cooley Law School and Oakland University.”

The 22-day program for stu-

dents completing their sopho- more year of undergraduate studies is designed to develop the critical thinking skills nec- essary to succeed on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and in law school. Students will participate in classes on logic and critical reasoning through classical philosophy and attend classes taught by Cooley faculty members in the areas of contracts, civil proce- dure, professional responsibil-

ity, legal writing, and appellate advocacy.

The capstone event of the

program will be an oral argu- ment conducted by a panel of Michigan Court of Appeals judges, led by Judge Cynthia D. Stephens. The students will review the briefs in the case, write a bench memoran- dum and orally argue the case themselves before panels of student judges, and then be the special guests of honor at the Court of Appeals argu- ment.

Michigan business leaders deliver straight talk and solutions at ‘Pancakes’ forum

CHRONICLE STAFF REPORTS

“As long as people are

taking time to talk to each other and focus on the issues, there’s more opportunity to find solutions to the critical problems facing our region and state.”

So said Sam Logan, pub-

lisher of the Michigan Chron- icle, during opening remarks at the recent “Pancakes and Politics” breakfast event at the Detroit Athletic Club featuring four influential business lead- ers.

The CEOs took to the stage

to address the crowd and answer some tough questions during the riveting “Pancakes” event moderated by Carol Cain, Emmy Award winning host of “Michigan Matters” on WWJ-TV CBS Detroit.

Panelist Peter Karmanos

said Detroit’s image and repu- tation as a dangerous place is overblown by the media.

“We moved our company

downtown, and we’ve never had an incident,” Karmanos, chairman and CEO of Compu- ware Corp. said.

His comments came in

response to a CNN report that ranked Detroit as one of the 10 most dangerous cit- ies along with Baghdad and Cape Town.

Other “Pancakes” panelists

were: Cindy Pasky, president and CEO of Strategic Staff- ing Solutions; Mike Jander- noa, director at Perrigo, who brought in perspective from the west side of the state, and Lorenzo Creighton, president and COO of MGM Grand De- troit casino.

Jandernoa, a member of the

Business Leaders For Michi- gan group of CEOs, talked about the report his organi- zation issued on woes of the state.

“It is a plan that can get

us back on track. It’s a plan that’s long term and holistic, and it’s about investing in our schools. It requires give and take by Democrats and Repub- licans and ending the gridlock in Lansing, but we can do it,” Jandernoa said.

Pasky said the election in

Detroit – and major changes on city council – gave her hope voters can inspire change again this year.

“We all need to ask ques-

tions of those seeking office,” she said.

Education was a major

part of the dialogue as fund- ing, helping Detroit Public Schools and making sure stu- dents were prepared were all mentioned.

“We shouldn’t just focus on the A students, we need to

focus on the C students, too,” said Creighton.

Sponsors of “Pancakes” in- clude: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, HAP, Honigman, Miller, Schwartz & Cohn, LLP, PNC, Strategic Staffing Solu- tions, UHY, Bank of America, Compuware, Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries,Fifth Third Bank, MGM Grand Detroit, Quicken Loans, St. John Prov- idence Health System, Wayne State University and WWJ-TV CBS Detroit, Crain’s Detroit Business and WWJ Newsradio 950.
