State Rep. Bettie C. Scott
has filed to run for the open 2nd Michigan State Senate seat this fall.
A noted consumer advocate
and community activist, Rep. Scott’s announcement opens what will likely be a week- end full of many political an- nouncements with the State Democratic Endorsement Convention being held at Cobo Hall in Detroit this Saturday. (Scott will address the 13th and 14th U.S. Congressional District Conventions there on Saturday morning to outline her Senate campaign.)
“The 2010 elections are
vital to this community in par- ticular because redistricting threatens our community’s political strength next year once the U.S. Census results are complete,” said Scott. “The senator from the 2nd District must continue to be a firm advocate to maintain our communities’ political identity in the face of likely assault by Lansing to remove representation in this part of Wayne County.”
The 2nd Senate District
includes portions of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park and all of the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods. Current State Sen. Martha G. Scott is term-limited for the seat.
After retiring as a sergeant
from the Detroit Police De- partment, Rep. Bettie C. Scott was first elected to the State House in 2006 and then over- whelmingly reelected in 2008.
“I believe it’s important to
continue my efforts for public safety and effective state legis- lation for consumers, seniors and vulnerable citizens,” said Rep. Scott. “I’ve worked with community groups and orga- nizations to foster the core agenda for this community and it’s time to continue that work in the Senate, which has blocked much important work for Wayne County. I will play a major role with Wayne County coalitions as a crucial voting bloc for the state’s most popu- lous county.”
Scott has been honored
many times. She was recog- nized with Chief Merit Awards during her more than 17 years on the Detroit Police force and received medals for heroically saving lives. In her four years as a state representative, she has received statewide recog- nition for her legislative ef- forts on the Drivers’ Respon- sibility Act and granting tax credits for core curriculum school donations.

2010 DTE Energy
Foundation
tree planting grants
The Department of Natural
Resources and Environment and DTE Energy Founda- tion today announced that 39 grants totaling $79,415 have been awarded to communi- ties in Michigan for local tree planting projects.
Planting trees is part of DTE
Energy’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship as well as its voluntary partici- pation in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Global Climate Challenge program. Some key benefits trees provide are carbon sequestration, clean air and clean water. Through the process of photosynthesis, trees convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar, oxygen and eventually wood.
Since 1995, DTE Energy, its
foundation and the DNRE have partnered to plant more than 20 million trees throughout Michigan. This program is de- signed to increase the number and diversity of healthy trees and forests in Michigan com- munities served by DTE Energy and its subsidiaries. The USDA Forest Service rec- ognizes and commends both DTE Energy Foundation and the DNRE for their ongoing partnership and support for tree planting programs in Michigan.
For more information or a
list of approved grants, contact Kevin Sayers, DNRE urban and community forester, at (517) 241-4632 or visit the program website at www.michigan.gov/ dnrucf. For further informa- tion about the DTE Energy Foundation or the company’s participation in the Climate Challenge Program, please contact Eileen Dixon at (313) 235 9154.
