FEATURE Machine Vision & Web Inspection The perfect inspection partnership

For more than 20 years, UK- based Tectonic International, known for its award-winning

products, has been providing web based and converting industries around the globe with blue chip print inspection solutions for more efficient printing processes. Always at the forefront of product development as technology moves forward, the company’s latest print inspection system, PANTHER, uses digital cameras and intuitive touchscreen controls to monitor print and colour so the press operator is alerted to deviation in colour immediately as it occurs. The PANTHER incorporates the latest digital megapixel progressive scan technology to provide active inspection function that uses high resolution cameras to present crisp, clear images from a live run. Tectonic’s bespoke software has been designed to give the operator instant reflex action for fast correction of faults and therefore, significant reduction in waste. PANTHER, claimed to be the industry’s first ‘mid-range’ digital print inspection

system, controlled using a tactile touch- screen, includes time saving features as standard based on ‘what the printer wants’. This desirable line-up therefore provides an easy to use, powerful system that works with the printer to improve quality, increase productivity and improve the bottom-line. To complement its range of print inspection systems and understanding that print quality could never be perfect without a perfectly mounted printing plate, Tectonic developed and patented what is said to be the industry’s first plate mounting machine, the FLEXICO V5. This incorporates a support plate-bed, thus allowing a printing plate to be positioned and mounted on a cylinder or sleeve without the need for the plate to be handheld. This development was quickly followed by the introduction of the FLEXICO V50 especially for wide webs.

Founded in 1993, and manufacturer of the

award-winning Lynx range of video web inspection systems, Tectonic International is one of the global leaders in print verification tools, using the latest technology to provide user friendly, cost effective quality tools to help improve and increase manufacturing productivity. The company has installations in over 70 countries for some of the industry’s biggest names.

A complete inspection offering from Grafikontrol

Grafikontrol Controlli Grafici e Industriali (Graphics and Industrial Controls) is one of the world’s most established

manufacturers of technologically advanced register controls and image inspection systems for web fed presses in the packaging and publication markets. Founded in 1969 by Antonio De Grandis and Umberto Filippi and Eurograv’s Bob Attard, Grafikontrol is now in its third generation of family ownership. Its range of quality control systems includes: Matrix is the basic component of the TQC- 360 degree line. Its primary function is to provide the highest image quality using the

six-megapixel colour digital camera combined with the new generation of high efficiency LED illumination. Printers need to equip their presses with systems that can guarantee a total quality control and avoid costly reprints or monetary credits for customers. Lynex is a 100 per cent print inspection developed by Grafikontrol to assure total quality control during the printing process. The continuous inspection of the entire print repeat, with programmable sensitivities, allows the automatic detection of all substrate defects and a real time production evaluation. Accurate colour measurement during

production is extremely important to guarantee consistent, high quality output. The inline colour measurement allows real time evaluation and takes immediate action to correct the colour trend before it goes out of tolerance. ChromaLab software feeds machine data to an ink dispensing system for perfect correction of the ink formulation. Progrex (seen left) combines the Lynex system for 100 per cent web inspection with full print repeat display, and the Matrix area camera for an accurate visualisation. These parallel functions allow control of the

printing process from a single user interface. In the UK, Eurograv and Grafikontrol have installed around 50 systems at flexible packaging printers and in Europe the companies have well over 1,000 systems installed on both flexo and gravure presses. Procheck is a waste management system that allows real waste tracking through the entire process, from printing to slitting. The system uses information gathered during the print inspection and transfers it to the next converting process (slitting or doctoring) where the waste is removed. Procheck allows the traceability of defects for accurate removal and a special synch-code marking system is used on the edge of the substrate relating to job number and roll length. The system connects to the controls of the slitter as the software is able to stop it at the defect location for its removal. To help the operator, a defect’s image sequence is displayed on the operator screen during the process. The information for each roll can be edited by the quality control personnel before sending it to the final process with only the desired defects being removed.
