Worn shock absorbers are the hidden safety concern in winter driving conditions

from back to front under hard braking. Excessive weight transfer — particularly when cornering — can increase the vehicle roll rate and potentially lead to an accident. Like most steering and suspension

or many of us, the arrival of winter brings the

increased hazards of icy or snow-covered roads. But another potential

danger — one or more worn shock absorbers — is oſten hidden out of view beneath our vehicles. Shocks play a vital role in helping maintain

firm contact between a vehicle’s tyres and the road surface, in a range of situations. When shocks are degraded, however, they can allow tyres and wheels to bounce away from the road surface, causing a loss of traction. Brian Sanders, business support manager of Tenneco, manufacturer of Monroe shock

absorbers and suspension components says: “Many vehicle owners are careful to check their tyres before winter to be sure they have adequate tread depth for a firm grip of the road. But if that tyre isn’t being held firmly against the highway, it can’t do its job — which can severely affect braking performance and overall vehicle control.” In addition to helping a vehicle stop sooner,

shocks interact with other undercar components to provide safe steering performance and stability. Shocks control the transfer of vehicle weight from side to side around corners and

components, shock absorbers and struts degrade at varying rates based on the type of driving, vehicle loads, road conditions and other factors. Tenneco recommends that shocks and struts are inspected by a professional technician at 50,000 miles of service and as part of every tyre replacement, brake job and/ or alignment. “Shocks and struts are safety components

that also help provide a more comfortable and controlled ride,” Sanders says. “Helping to keep drivers safe is their most important role, and it’s critical for vehicle owners and their service providers to replace degraded units before driving in challenging conditions.”
