Getaway

TRYING TIMES: The TTG Travel Awards unfortunately don’t include an accolade for “the airport that’s put in the most effort to change the government’s mind”, but if we did, Gatwick would surely be the winner. The West-Sussex airport might have lost out on being recommended by the Davies Commission, but it still seems intent on following the old adage, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Since Sir Howard came out with his proposals advocating Heathrow for expansion in July, our inboxes have been flooded with press releases from Gatwick urging us to think otherwise. The latest – which arrived this week – is a 50-page dossier in which it attacks the commission’s report, using a variety of rather unfriendly adjectives, including “superficial”, “flawed”, “inconsistent” and “erroneous”. come... Maybe it’s time to hug it out and let it go, Gatwick?

HAVING A BLAST: Speaking of airports, Dublin airport was also in the headlines this week – albeit for slightly different reasons. It’s always reassuring to hear that security officers are taking their jobs seriously, and WW is sure we’re not alone in wanting to make sure airport officials are always on the look out for dangerous weaponry, but we’re not entirely sure that a Minion, er “fart blaster”, counts as such… Security staff in Dublin apparently did though. Three-year- old Leo Fitzpatrick saw his £25 toy taken off him, after staff decided that it posed a risk, and had to be seized under rules concerning governing replica weapons. “It’s just ridiculous,” his mum was quoted. “I mean, would you shake with fear if I pointed a Minions Fart Blaster at you?” A very valid point Ms Fitzpatrick. Now if it was a light sabre, however…
